In the world of animal rescue, every day counts, but for a dog named Percy, the numbers have begun to tell a story of incredible patience and quiet heartbreak. Percy, a soulful American Staffordshire terrier, has spent nearly 1,500 days living behind the bars of a shelter kennel.
To put that in perspective, that is four entire years—over half of his eight-year life—waiting for a family that has yet to walk through the door. While most dogs find their match in weeks or months, Percy has watched thousands of other pups come and go, yet his leash remains hanging on the wall.
Percy is currently the longest-serving resident at PAWS Humane Society, Inc. in Wilmington, Ohio. On January 23, he will hit that staggering 1,500-day milestone. Rather than letting this anniversary pass in silence, the shelter has decided to throw a “Birthday PAW-ty” for their favorite resident on January 24, 2026.

This isn’t just a celebration of another year of life; it is a desperate, hopeful invitation to the community to finally see the dog that everyone has been overlooking. PAWS has even announced that Percy’s adoption fee is fully covered, removing every possible barrier between him and a soft place to sleep.
Despite the repetitive nature of shelter life, Percy hasn’t let his spirit dim. The volunteers who know him best describe him as “the bestest boy,” a loyal and loving companion who still has a “sunny, optimistic personality” despite his circumstances. He doesn’t ask for much—just a patch of sun to bask in, some belly rubs, and the occasional treat or toy.
He is house-trained, up to date on his vaccinations, and a perfect gentleman on car rides. He is the kind of dog who is ready to be someone’s best friend today, if only given the chance to show it.
Of course, Percy’s long stay can be attributed to a few specific needs. He is looking for a home where he can be the “only child,” as he isn’t compatible with other dogs or cats. In a world where many households already have pets, this requirement has made his search for a home significantly harder.

However, for a family looking for a single, devoted companion, Percy is a goldmine of affection. He is especially friendly once he gets to know you, offering a level of loyalty that only a dog who has waited 1,500 days can truly give.
The “Paw-ty for Percy” is more than just an event for one dog; it is a spotlight on the many long-term shelter residents who are often invisible to the public. Percy represents the “seniors” and the “only-pets” who are frequently bypassed for younger, easier-to-place puppies.
As the staff at PAWS prepares the decorations and the treats, their only wish is that this party marks the very last day Percy ever has to sleep in a kennel. He has spent four years being a “good boy” for the volunteers; now, it’s time for him to be a “good boy” for a family of his own.
