In the vast expanse of Arizona’s wilderness, a heartwarming tale of instinct, bravery, and the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs unfolded.
On April 14, 2025, two-year-old Bodin Allen wandered away from his home in Seligman, Arizona. As the sun set, his parents, Sarah and Corey Allen, faced every parent’s worst nightmare. A massive search operation ensued, with over 40 members of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office combing the rugged terrain. The area, known for its challenging landscape and wildlife, including mountain lions, posed significant risks for the missing toddler.
After 16 grueling hours, hope emerged from an unexpected source. Rancher Scotty Dunton discovered Bodin at the entrance of his property, accompanied by his loyal Anatolian Pyrenees, Buford. Dunton recounted, “When I was driving out the driveway, I noticed my dog was sitting down by the entrance, and I looked up and this little kid was standing there with my dog.”

Buford, known for his protective nature and nightly patrols to guard against coyotes, had found Bodin under a tree and led him to safety. The toddler, though upset, was in good health, a testament to Buford’s guardianship. Dunton remarked, “He loves kids, so he wouldn’t leave him when he found him.”
The Allens expressed immense gratitude, describing the rescue as surreal. Sarah Allen shared, “[Bodin is] here, he’s healthy, he’s fine like nothing ever happened, it still feels like a dream.”
In recognition of his heroism, Buford was honored as an honorary member of the Yavapai County Search and Rescue Team. The family, inspired by the event, plans to raise awareness about missing children through community initiatives, including building lighthouses and distributing safety whistles.
This story serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary capabilities of our canine companions and the profound impact they have on our lives.
