When most of us think of a winter storm, we picture cold air, snow‑covered roads, and the challenges of staying warm.
But for Benji, a one‑and‑a‑half‑year‑old Bernedoodle from Philadelphia, winter weather became much more than an inconvenience — it became a life‑or‑death situation after he went missing in a brutal snowstorm that swept through the region at the end of January.
Benji had only recently been adopted by Ece Bal and Justin Cerone when he slipped out of the house on the night of Saturday, January 24, just as the storm was beginning to intensify.
Overnight, temperatures plunged, snow fell heavily, and the conditions became dangerously cold — a terrifying combination for a dog wandering alone.
For 48 hours, Benji was missing. His family and neighbors were frantic. As the snow accumulated, every minute that passed made the situation feel more desperate.
Snowstorms can be treacherous for a pet on its own — hidden hazards, icy winds, and freezing temperatures all pose real threats. But instead of losing hope, the community rallied to help search for him.

Someone from a local rescue reached out to Rick Rotondo Photography and Lost Pet Thermal Drone Search, a volunteer group that specializes in using thermal‑imaging drones to find missing animals and people.
These drones can detect heat signatures — even through thick snow and in bitter cold — making them invaluable tools in situations where standard ground searches might fail.
Drone operator Rick Rotondo began scanning the area where Benji was last seen. He focused on quieter spots where a scared animal might hide — under cars, beside buildings, or in vacant lots where winds might be blocked and snow might drift differently.
Just a half‑mile from Benji’s home, the drone picked up a heat signal that stood out from the cold landscape.
When Rotondo zoomed in, he saw Benji. The dog was scared and tired, but alive. According to reports, at one point Benji even jumped nearly 15 feet off a wall and ran at full speed when he finally realized rescuers were near — a moment described as “heart‑stopping” by the operator.
Once Benji’s exact location was identified from the air, ground teams and neighbors coordinated to carefully approach and guide him back home. It was teamwork at its best: people working together, staying calm under pressure, and using technology in creative and life‑saving ways.
Within hours of being spotted by drone, Benji was back with his overjoyed family — safe, exhausted, and out of the storm’s reach.
Benji’s ordeal underscores how thermal drones are becoming essential tools in searches for missing pets, especially in situations where severe weather or rugged terrain make it hard to cover ground on foot.
They allow searchers to see what traditional methods might miss, particularly when heat signatures stand out sharply against a cold environment.
But beyond the technology, Benji’s story is ultimately about community and compassion.
Neighbors helped pass out information, local rescuers never stopped searching, and the couple’s calm but determined response when they had eyes on their dog likely helped ensure Benji was found and guided safely home.
After what was surely a terrifying couple of days for him and his owners, Benji’s reunion was emotional — a reminder that even in the worst weather, hope, teamwork, and a little technology can make all the difference.
