A small dog with a big story has captured the attention and hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Coco, a 7‑year‑old Pomeranian, was found abandoned inside a backpack at a community soccer club in Calgary — severely dehydrated, emaciated, and struggling for life when rescue workers arrived.

It was early February when the Calgary Humane Society got the call. Volunteers discovered Coco tucked inside an unzipped backpack, alone and in desperate need of help.

The tiny dog’s condition was serious: she was extremely underweight and dehydrated, signs she had been neglected for some time.

What makes this story especially shocking is how calmly and quietly Coco must have suffered before someone finally noticed her. There were no cameras around the area, and authorities still don’t know when or how she was dropped off.

Temperatures that day hovered in the chilly range, typical for a Canadian winter, but still cold enough that a little dog exposed to the elements would be at serious risk.

In the face of troubling unknowns and a heartbreaking start, Coco’s rescue set off a wave of emotion online.

A Facebook appeal asking for information about who abandoned her quickly spread, attracting thousands of reactions, comments, and shares — many filled with anger, sadness, and disbelief at how someone could leave a dog to suffer like that.

People called the act “cruel” and “cowardly,” while others held out hope that someone would come forward with leads as the investigation continues.

Comments from posts shared by the humane society poured in: “This poor baby… such cruelty for cruelty’s sake,” wrote one viewer, while others expressed disbelief that anyone would walk away from such an obviously vulnerable animal. Some even speculated that Coco might have been stolen — given the fact she had been placed in a relatively nice backpack — but that theory remains unproven.

Despite her rough start, Coco’s story has taken a hopeful turn. After being rushed into emergency care, she spent more than a week receiving treatment for dehydration and severe malnourishment.

Veterinarians also began addressing dental disease and other health concerns, giving her the best chance of a full recovery.

Right now, Coco isn’t available for adoption. The shelter is focused on getting her stable and healthy enough to be ready for a loving home someday.

There’s no timeline yet, but the goal is clear: ensure she’s safe and comfortable before bringing a new family into the picture.

Under Alberta’s Animal Protection Act, abandoning or neglecting an animal in distress is a criminal offense that carries significant penalties — including fines and possible jail time — but so far no charges have been filed in Coco’s case.

Authorities continue to review tips from the public in hopes of identifying those responsible.

Coco’s journey from abandonment to care is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It highlights the worst of human neglect alongside the best of compassionate rescue work.

For everyone following her story, her ongoing recovery is a powerful reminder: even the smallest lives deserve dignity, love, and a chance to thrive.
