In the unforgiving terrain of Arizona’s Black Canyon City Trail, two dogs, Spike and Snickers, endured a harrowing four-day ordeal after escaping from their home. Their journey underscores the critical need for pet safety measures and community vigilance.
Spike, an 11-year-old weighing nearly 100 pounds, and Snickers, a spirited two-year-old, vanished into the wilderness, leaving their owner, Kathleen Paulson Wesley, in distress. “The worst thing is not knowing if they’re hurt or if somebody took them,” she expressed, emphasizing the anguish of uncertainty.
Determined to find her beloved pets, Wesley turned to social media, posting pleas and updates that quickly spread. The power of community became evident when a hiker named Steve, familiar with the online posts, spotted the duo approximately 1.5 miles from the trailhead. Equipped with a rescue harness, Steve carried Spike on his back for half a mile until Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical personnel arrived to assist with the final stretch.

Thanks to the combined efforts of a vigilant community member and dedicated rescue teams, Spike and Snickers were safely reunited with their family. While Spike is recovering more slowly due to his age and size, both dogs are now home, bringing immense relief to their owner. “When I got the call at work, it was like my whole body just went into a sigh of relief,” Wesley recounted.
Captain Mike Snodgrass of Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical highlighted the significance of companionship, noting that the dogs’ bond likely aided their survival. “Having both of them together… made it easier for them to locate water sources,” he said.
The safe return of Spike and Snickers is a testament to community solidarity and the enduring bond between pets and their owners. Let this story inspire proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our furry companions.
