Imagine being left alone in the vast, unforgiving expanse of Utah’s San Rafael Swell. That’s the harsh reality a group of dogs faced, abandoned and struggling to survive in the desert.
On April 23, 2025, two tourists exploring Emery County stumbled upon these forsaken canines. Recognizing the dire situation, they took immediate action, managing to capture 11 of the dogs. Trusted Trappers, a dedicated Utah-based dog trapping organization, secured the remaining dog, bringing the total to 12 rescued animals.
Best Friends Animal Society, a renowned animal welfare organization, stepped in to provide care for these dogs. Five of them were taken to their Pet Lifesaving Center in Sugar House, where they began the journey of recovery. One dog, Luca, initially exhibited extreme fear, drooling and avoiding contact. However, within just three hours in his foster home, he began to relax, seeking affection and following his caregiver around.
The remaining dogs are set to arrive at the center, and Best Friends is actively seeking foster homes to provide these animals with the love and patience they need. Many of the dogs are still fearful and require environments where they can decompress and feel safe.

This rescue mission underscores the importance of community involvement in animal welfare. Without the quick thinking of the tourists and the dedication of organizations like Trusted Trappers and Best Friends Animal Society, these dogs might not have survived.
If you’re interested in making a difference, consider opening your home to one of these deserving dogs. Fostering provides a temporary safe haven and can be a transformative experience for both the animal and the caregiver.
