For more than two years, Mummy has been waiting for someone to see past her fear.
The deaf Pittie arrived at a rescue in Illinois about two and a half years ago. Staff quickly discovered that she had a sweet personality, but her nervousness often took center stage.
She kept her distance from people and wasn’t comfortable being touched.
That made finding her a home incredibly difficult.
Potential adopters were intimidated by Mummy’s guarded behavior, even though the people who knew her best understood there was a loving dog underneath all that uncertainty.
She eventually found someone willing to give her a chance, but sadly, the adoption lasted only six months. Her family returned her to the rescue, leaving everyone who cared for her heartbroken.
The staff knew Mummy didn’t deserve another disappointment.
They also knew that once she trusted someone, she formed an incredibly strong bond.
“Once you’re in her circle, you’re in her circle,” the rescue’s director explained.
Now, after another year waiting at the shelter, Mummy finally got something she desperately needed: a chance to experience the world beyond the rescue.
It was her first outing in a year.
Two people familiar with Mummy took her on a special field trip, but they knew better than to rush her. Because she can become nervous around unfamiliar situations, they allowed her to move at her own pace.
Their first stop was a pet supply store.
Mummy got to explore the aisles, sniffing toys and treats and taking in all the new smells. Instead of shutting down, she seemed curious about everything around her.
Then came a walk.
And that’s when Mummy surprised everyone.
The walk turned into a run.
Suddenly, the nervous shelter dog was racing along like she had been doing it her entire life.
One of her companions couldn’t believe how naturally she moved, joking that Mummy was running better than most dogs.
For everyone watching, it was an emotional discovery.
This wasn’t the frightened dog people saw inside the shelter.
This was Mummy.
Brave.
Playful.
Energetic.
Friendly.
And ready to enjoy life.
The outing showed just how much potential can be hidden beneath a rescue dog’s fear. Mummy didn’t necessarily need someone to change who she was. She needed someone patient enough to give her the confidence to reveal herself.
And once she felt supported, she absolutely blossomed.
“She is a blast to be around,” one of her companions said.
Unfortunately, Mummy’s story still doesn’t have the ending everyone is hoping for.
She continues to wait for a permanent family.
Because of her needs, the rescue believes she’d do best in a home without children or other pets. She needs someone who can give her time, attention, patience, and consistency.
Most importantly, she needs someone who won’t give up when she takes a while to trust.
The rescue doesn’t want Mummy to experience another failed adoption. After being returned once already, another heartbreak could be devastating for a dog who has spent so long learning to feel safe.
Yet Mummy keeps waiting.
Day after day, she remains hopeful that someone will finally walk through the door and recognize what her rescuers already know.
She’s not scary.
She’s scared.
And there’s a huge difference.
Behind the guarded behavior is a dog who loves deeply once she feels secure. Her recent adventure proved that she can run, explore, play, and enjoy herself just like any other dog.
She simply needs the right person beside her.
Mummy has already waited long enough.
After years of uncertainty and another year back at the shelter, she deserves someone willing to give her the time she needs to feel safe.
Because somewhere beneath that nervous exterior is the sweet, loyal dog everyone has been waiting to see.
And now that Mummy has shown the world who she really is, hopefully her forever person won’t be far behind.
