Sherry’s life looked very different when she first came home.

The rescue dog was so frightened that trusting people seemed almost impossible. She preferred staying in her kennel, where she felt safe, and would retreat there whenever the world around her became overwhelming.

But everything changed when two tiny foster kittens entered her life.

Sherry eventually became a gentle surrogate mother to more than 70 kittens, helping vulnerable babies feel safe while discovering a new sense of purpose for herself.

Her journey began at a shelter, where her future was uncertain. She was scheduled to be euthanized, but Jen’s husband arrived just an hour before it was supposed to happen and brought her home.

The rescue saved Sherry’s life, but helping her feel safe took much longer.

When she arrived, she was extremely anxious and hesitant around her new family. It took about a year of patience, consistency and unconditional love before she finally began lowering her guard.

Sherry needed space and wanted to approach people on her own terms.

Then Jen introduced her to two tiny foster kittens named Goose and Maverick.

The family wasn’t sure how Sherry would react.

Instead of avoiding the kittens, Sherry immediately seemed to understand that they needed her. She carefully lay on her side, creating a warm, comfortable space where the tiny kittens could snuggle against her.

The kittens even tried to nurse, despite Sherry being unable to produce milk. She patiently allowed them to stay close, providing the comfort and security they were missing from their own mother.

Soon, Sherry’s new role became a regular part of her life.

Whenever a new group of foster kittens arrived, she eagerly went over to investigate. But she didn’t overwhelm them. Instead, she gave the kittens something she had once needed herself: time.

Sherry would lie down nearby and wait.

The kittens could approach when they felt ready.

Once they trusted her, Sherry became incredibly patient. The tiny cats could climb across her face, chew on her paws and play with her ears without upsetting her.

It was as though Sherry had taken the lessons from her own recovery and passed them on to every kitten she met.

Her transformation also gave the kittens an important advantage.

Because they grew up around a dog, they became comfortable with canines at an early age. That socialization could make it easier for them to transition into adoptive homes, especially families that already have dogs.

For the kittens, Sherry was a source of comfort and confidence.

For Sherry, they seemed to provide something equally important: purpose.

The dog who once struggled to trust anyone had become a dependable source of safety for dozens of vulnerable animals.

Her story is a beautiful reminder that healing doesn’t always happen in the way we expect.

Sometimes, a frightened animal needs patience and space.

Sherry was given a second chance when she needed it most.

Now, she’s giving second chances to tiny kittens in her own special way.

More than 70 kittens have benefited from her gentle nature, but the impact goes beyond those numbers.

The dog who once hid from the world has become the one everyone wants to run toward.

And all it took was a little trust, a lot of patience and a couple of tiny kittens to show Sherry just how much love she had to give.
