Most dogs wait for their humans to grab the leash before a walk can begin.
One Golden Retriever, however, apparently decided she could handle the entire operation herself.
Instead of waiting patiently for someone to lead the way, this clever pup grabs her own leash and takes herself for a walk.
Yes, really.
She carries the leash in her mouth and confidently strolls along as though she has been doing it her entire life.
It’s the kind of behavior that immediately raises an important question:
Who’s actually walking whom?
The Golden Retriever seems to have made her decision.
She has the leash.
She knows where she’s going.
And she apparently sees no reason for her human to interfere.
There’s something especially funny about watching a dog take control of an activity that normally requires plenty of human assistance.
Walks usually involve someone putting on the leash, holding the handle and deciding where the pair will go.
This Golden Retriever appears to have eliminated the middleman.
She simply picks up the leash and gets moving.
Her confidence makes the whole thing even more entertaining. She doesn’t look confused or uncertain about what she’s doing.
Instead, she seems perfectly comfortable carrying the leash herself and walking along at her own pace.
And while it may look like a hilarious trick, dogs carrying their own leashes isn’t completely unheard of.
Some dogs naturally enjoy holding objects in their mouths, particularly items associated with activities they enjoy.
For a dog who loves going outside, the leash may have become part of the excitement surrounding a walk.
In other words, she may simply be thinking:
“Let’s go.”
And if nobody is moving quickly enough, she’ll take matters into her own paws.
Golden Retrievers are known for being intelligent, eager to please and highly engaged with their humans, which can make their quirky habits especially entertaining.
They’re also often enthusiastic about carrying things around.
Toys.
Balls.
Sticks.
And apparently, their own walking equipment.
This particular pup has taken that instinct to another level.
She doesn’t just carry her leash around the house.
She uses it to take herself on an actual walk.
It’s almost as though she has decided that her human’s role is no longer to control the walk, but simply to come along for the adventure.
And honestly, she seems pretty good at it.
The funniest part may be how ordinary she makes the whole thing look.
There’s no dramatic pulling or frantic running.
She simply holds the leash and walks.
As if this is exactly how every dog should do it.
Of course, a dog taking control of her own leash doesn’t mean humans can completely clock out. Dogs still need supervision during walks, particularly around traffic, other animals and unfamiliar environments.
But as a funny little routine, it’s hard not to appreciate this Golden Retriever’s confidence.
She seems to have decided that she’s perfectly capable of handling her own transportation.
Why wait for someone else when you can simply grab the leash yourself?
