Traffic was moving slowly along a busy road in Los Angeles County when rescuers finally spotted the reason.

Two dogs were sitting directly on the centerline, surrounded by cars that were carefully swerving around them.

It was a dangerous place for any dog to be.

But the scene became even more heartbreaking when rescuers realized the two animals weren’t simply traveling together.

They were protecting each other.

Dog rescuers Suzette Hall and Rosario Ortiz had heard about a pair of dogs wandering near the road. When they arrived, they found a large shepherd mix lying beside a tiny curly-haired dog who couldn’t have weighed much more than five pounds.

The size difference was striking.

But what happened next revealed just how strong their bond was.

The larger dog, later identified as Nova, positioned herself around the little dog, Benji. She stayed close, watching every vehicle and every movement around them.

She wasn’t leaving him.

She Wouldn’t Let Her Brother Out Of Her Sight

Hall and Ortiz knew they had to get the dogs away from the road quickly.

They stopped traffic on one side and carefully coaxed the pair into a nearby yard, where they could attempt a safer rescue.

The rescuers placed food inside two traps, hoping to capture the dogs separately.

But Nova had other priorities.

When rescuers placed Benji inside a crate, Nova immediately stayed beside him. She watched through the metal bars and refused to wander away.

Even though she was nervous about the rescuers, she wasn’t willing to abandon her little companion.

Eventually, food convinced Nova to enter the second trap, and both dogs were safely secured.

After spending so much time navigating the streets, the pair were taken to a veterinary hospital.

That’s when the rescuers discovered the biggest surprise of all.

Their Family Had Been Looking Everywhere

Nova and Benji weren’t abandoned.

Their family had been desperately searching for them.

The dogs had escaped from their home, which was miles away from where rescuers found them. Their journey had clearly been a long one. Their coats were dirty, and their paws were worn from all the traveling.

Yet somehow, they had stayed together.

And throughout that journey, Nova had remained by Benji’s side.

When their family finally arrived, the reunion was filled with excitement, relief and plenty of hugs and kisses.

After all the fear and uncertainty, Nova and Benji were finally back where they belonged.

A Little Dog Had A Very Big Protector

It’s impossible to know exactly what the dogs experienced during their adventure.

But one thing was clear: Nova never stopped looking out for Benji.

She could have run away from the traffic.

She could have focused only on finding safety for herself.

Instead, she stayed beside her tiny brother.

For Benji, having Nova nearby may have made an unfamiliar and frightening journey feel a little less scary.

Now, the two dogs are safely back home with their family. Their humans have also added new safety measures to prevent another great escape.

Their days of wandering miles from home are hopefully over.

But their greatest adventure may have already given everyone a beautiful reminder about the loyalty dogs can have for one another.

Because sometimes, the strongest kind of love isn’t loud or dramatic.

Sometimes, it’s simply a dog standing beside another dog and refusing to leave.

Nova did exactly that.

And for little Benji, she was his hero.
