There are rules on the farm.

Apparently, Cletus knows them all.

The livestock guardian dog was keeping a close eye on Dixie Belle, a horse he clearly adores, when another dog decided to get a little too involved.

Rosco, a herd dog, began circling Dixie Belle as she peacefully grazed.

Rosco may have simply been doing what he was bred to do, but Cletus wasn’t interested in watching his favorite horse get pushed around.

So he stepped in.

And his method of intervention was hilariously direct: one perfectly timed smack.

Two Dogs, Two Very Different Jobs

At first glance, it might look like Cletus was simply picking a fight.

But there’s more going on.

Rosco is a herd dog, meaning his instincts tell him to control the movement of livestock. Circling, staring, chasing and even using gentle nipping can all be part of that working behavior.

Cletus has an entirely different job.

As a livestock guardian dog, his role is to watch over animals and protect them from potential threats.

His instincts encourage him to stay alert, monitor what’s happening around the herd and intervene when something doesn’t seem right.

So while Rosco was apparently thinking, “I’ve got a job to do,” Cletus seemed to be thinking, “Not around her.”

And Dixie Belle?

She just wanted to eat her grass.

Cletus Makes His Feelings Clear

In the video, Dixie Belle is calmly grazing when Rosco starts moving closer and circling around her.

Cletus is nearby, watching everything unfold.

The guardian dog clearly adores Dixie Belle, so when Rosco gets close enough to potentially nip or push her along, Cletus decides that the situation needs correcting.

That’s when the smack happens.

It isn’t a dramatic fight. Cletus doesn’t launch into an all-out attack. Instead, he delivers one quick correction that seems to communicate exactly what he wants Rosco to understand:

Back off.

The moment is funny precisely because both dogs appear to be taking their responsibilities seriously.

Rosco is trying to herd.

Cletus is trying to protect.

Neither seems particularly interested in changing careers.

Dixie Belle Has the Easiest Job

The horse at the center of the whole disagreement appears remarkably unbothered.

While the two dogs work out their professional differences, Dixie Belle continues doing what she was doing in the first place: grazing.

It’s almost as if she has seen this argument before and has decided that staying out of it is the smartest option.

And honestly, she may have the right idea.

The video is a perfect example of how different canine instincts can collide when multiple working dogs share the same space. Neither dog necessarily has bad intentions.

They’re simply responding to the world according to what they’ve been bred and trained to do.

When Instincts Meet

For owners and handlers, understanding those instincts is important.

Herding dogs may naturally want to move livestock, while guardian dogs may feel compelled to block, watch or protect them.

When both types of dogs are working around the same animals, supervision can help prevent their instincts from turning into conflict.

Training can also reinforce calm behavior, reliable recalls and commands such as “leave it,” giving dogs another way to respond when their instincts kick in.

Cletus may have settled the disagreement with a single smack, but the bigger lesson is that working dogs aren’t always thinking about the same assignment.

Rosco saw a herd.

Cletus saw his favorite horse.

And Dixie Belle saw lunch.

In the end, everyone stayed on the farm, the horse kept grazing, and Cletus made sure one thing was perfectly understood:
