When Marina arrived at a crowded animal shelter, she was already carrying a secret that was impossible to miss.

She was about to become a mom.

Very soon.

The sweet dog was heavily pregnant when she was surrendered to Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center.

The shelter was busy and resources were stretched thin, but everyone was understandably excited to see what would happen next.

Then Marina gave birth.

And that’s when the surprise really began.

She didn’t have four puppies.

She didn’t have six.

She had 14 puppies.

Fourteen tiny lives.

One exhausted mama.

And a whole lot of work ahead.

A Litter Nobody Expected

The size of Marina’s litter stunned everyone caring for her.

Having that many puppies survive was considered remarkable, especially because newborn puppies require constant attention, warmth and nourishment.

There was just one problem.

The shelter wasn’t equipped to care for such a large canine family.

Marina needed help.

Her puppies needed help.

And they needed it quickly.

So the shelter reached out to rescue organizations, hoping someone would be willing to take the entire family.

That’s when Saving Hope Rescue stepped forward.

They weren’t going to separate Marina from her babies.

They were going to give all 15 dogs a chance.

Mom Had Eyes Only For Her Puppies

When it was finally time for Marina and her puppies to leave the shelter, the scene was unforgettable.

The puppies were carefully placed inside a crate on a cart while Marina walked alongside them.

But Marina wasn’t interested in where she was going.

She wasn’t distracted by the people around her.

She wasn’t stopping to investigate her new surroundings.

Her attention was completely focused on her babies.

Every step she took was about them.

She watched the crate.

She stayed close.

She made sure her enormous little family was safe.

For Marina, nothing else seemed to matter.

A Special Place For A Special Family

Once they arrived at Saving Hope Rescue, Marina and her puppies were settled into one of the organization’s puppy pods.

These spaces are designed specifically for canine families who need extra care.

The pods provide climate control, music, video monitoring and access to an outdoor area.

For a new mother with 14 puppies, it was exactly the kind of environment she needed.

Marina settled in and immediately got back to business.

Feed the babies.

Watch the babies.

Keep the babies safe.

Repeat.

Her rescuers couldn’t help but be impressed by her dedication.

Fourteen Names, One Incredible Family

The puppies were given an adorable ocean-inspired collection of names.

There was Triton, Caspian, Reef, Cove, Minnie, Finn, Marlin, Tide, Nemo, Poseidon, Ariel, Oceans, Pearl and Coral.

And despite the enormous challenges that came with caring for such a large litter, the family began thriving.

There were some early difficulties.

With 14 hungry puppies competing for limited space during feeding, several struggled at first.

But they kept going.

And Marina kept caring for them.

Eventually, the puppies pulled through.

A Family Gets Its Second Chance

For the rescue team, Marina’s family was unlike anything they had encountered before.

They had already saved more than 20,000 animals, yet this was the largest litter they had ever taken in.

And now, just two weeks after arriving, Marina and her puppies were doing remarkably well.

The future is still ahead of them.

The puppies will eventually grow big enough to find families of their own, while Marina will also have the opportunity to find a forever home where she can finally relax after raising her enormous brood.

But for now, they’re together.

Safe.

Warm.

Fed.

Loved.

Marina arrived at the shelter needing someone to take a chance on her.

Instead, one rescue gave an entire family that chance.

Fourteen puppies may have been an extraordinary challenge.

But with a devoted mother and people willing to help, this remarkable family is proving that sometimes the biggest families can have the biggest happy endings.
