The truck was almost at the house.

And Bud was already waiting.

For FedEx delivery driver Jezzy Vi, one stop on his route had become much more than another package drop-off.

It was the stop he looked forward to most.

About a year ago, Vi started delivering to a new house on his route. Waiting in the front yard was a friendly white-and-gray border collie mix.

She wasn’t the first dog he’d met on the job. Vi had plenty of four-legged friends along his route.

But Bud was different.

From the beginning, she made it clear that she wanted to be his friend.

She would trot over with her tail wagging and that unmistakable doggy smile. Then she’d follow Vi to the front door, happily accepting a few pets.

It was sweet.

But then, during Vi’s third or fourth visit, Bud changed the routine.

She jumped up and hugged him.

Probably the goodest boy I’ve met in my 40 years of delivering. #fedex #goodboy #goodestboy #dogsoftiktok

Vi happily hugged her back, scratching her head until she finally let go.

And just like that, their tradition was born.

Every time Vi arrived, Bud knew exactly what came next.

First, she’d walk beside him all the way to the front door.

Then Vi would set down the package and take a picture.

And finally came the part Bud seemed to care about most.

The hug.

It became their little ritual.

Neither of them needed to be told what to do.

Bud knew.

Vi knew.

And somehow, a simple delivery stop had turned into one of the happiest moments of Vi’s workday.

There was just one funny detail.

Vi had never formally met Bud’s family.

He didn’t even know her real name.

So he gave her one himself.

Bud.

Over the next year, that nickname became attached to dozens of happy greetings, countless tail wags and a lot of hugs.

For Vi, Bud became more than a friendly dog waiting in a yard.

She became something to look forward to.

In fact, the house was usually his last stop of the day.

That made the routine even more special.

After spending hours making deliveries, Vi knew he would eventually reach Bud’s house.

And there she’d be.

Ready to walk with him.

Ready for her picture.

Ready for her hug.

During one recent visit, the pair shared a couple of their familiar squeezes before Vi finally had to head back to his truck.

But he didn’t leave empty-handed.

Before driving away, he tossed Bud some of her favorite treats.

Then he climbed into his truck with a huge smile.

It might have been their hundredth hug.

But it still felt just as exciting as the first.

That’s the beautiful thing about dogs.

They don’t need a complicated reason to be happy to see you.

They don’t care how busy your day has been.

If you’re someone they’ve decided they love, they’ll make room for you.

Bud had made Vi part of her daily world.

And Vi had made her part of his.

Somewhere between packages, doorsteps and busy workdays, the two had created something neither of them planned.

A friendship.

One hug at a time.

And for Vi, there is still one stop at the end of the day that makes the whole route feel a little brighter.

Bud’s house.

Because sometimes, the best part of the job isn’t what you’re delivering.

It’s who is waiting for you when you arrive.
