They never expected him to become part of their wedding.

But Benjamin had already become part of everything else.

Meghan and Matt Rogers had fostered dogs through Wags & Walks before, so when they heard about Benjamin, they initially had some reservations.

He was elderly.

He was blind.

He was deaf.

And he had medical problems, including seizures.

The couple worried about whether they would know how to communicate with him or properly care for all his needs.

But something inside Meghan told her they should give him a chance.

So they picked him up that night.

And almost immediately, Benjamin began changing their lives.

He wasn’t an especially affectionate dog at first.

He didn’t constantly demand attention or climb into their laps.

Instead, he seemed to need something much simpler.

Safety.

Patience.

A quiet place where he could finally relax.

Slowly, Benjamin began learning that he was home.

Meghan and Matt became his people.

And their home became his safe place.

One of Meghan’s favorite memories came when she realized Benjamin finally trusted them.

He fell asleep on Matt’s lap while Matt gently rubbed his head.

For a dog who had spent much of his life without the security of a permanent home, that tiny moment meant everything.

Benjamin was comfortable.

He was safe.

He was loved.

So when Meghan and Matt began planning their wedding, there was never really a question about whether Benjamin would be included.

He was family.

Because Benjamin hated riding in the car, the couple decided to have an intimate backyard ceremony with their immediate family.

And Benjamin was right there with them.

Wearing a tuxedo bandana, he wandered around the yard as the ceremony began.

Then came the moment nobody expected.

As Meghan walked toward Matt, Benjamin somehow made his way directly between them.

Despite being completely blind and deaf, he walked right into the space between the couple.

Everyone was overwhelmed.

Meghan says it brought them all to tears.

To her, it felt as though Benjamin somehow understood that something important was happening.

And she couldn’t help but think of it as his own little stamp of approval.

It was a beautiful moment.

And, heartbreakingly, it would become one of their last.

Benjamin died the following weekend.

Just days after standing between Meghan and Matt as they promised their lives to each other, he was gone.

The timing made the memory even more painful.

But it also made it more precious.

Meghan still remembers looking out the window and seeing Benjamin happily sunbathing in his favorite spot.

Matt remembers the moment Benjamin finally fell asleep on his lap.

Neither memory is about a grand adventure.

Neither involves anything extraordinary.

They are simple moments.

And perhaps that’s exactly what Benjamin came into their lives to teach them.

Love doesn’t always arrive with years ahead of it.

Sometimes it arrives late.

Sometimes it needs extra patience.

Sometimes it asks you to slow down and notice the smallest things.

And sometimes, a dog who cannot see or hear you can still find his way directly into your heart.

Meghan and Matt say they would foster Benjamin all over again, despite how difficult saying goodbye became.

Because he taught them patience.

He taught them perseverance.

Most importantly, he taught them to appreciate the little things.

Benjamin may have spent only a short chapter with them.

But he left behind a love that will last much longer.

He couldn’t hear their vows. He couldn’t see the ceremony. But somehow, he knew exactly where he belonged.
