Porky was carrying something no dog should have to carry.
An enormous growth covered one side of his face, weighing heavily on his tiny frame.
And somehow, this senior Chihuahua mix was still trying to survive.
When Hamilton County Dog Wardens found Porky on July 1, he was wandering as an injured stray.
He was underweight, frightened, and burdened by a massive growth that Cincinnati Animal CARE believed he may have been carrying for years.
Nobody knew exactly what his life had looked like before that day.
But they could see what it had become.
Porky needed help.
Fast.
Once he arrived at Cincinnati Animal CARE, the medical team began preparing for the surgery that could finally free him from the enormous burden.
It wouldn’t be simple.
The procedure required extensive work and careful attention. But Porky had already spent long enough struggling with the growth.
So they gave him a chance.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.
Porky woke up.
And the massive growth was gone.
For the first time in what may have been years, his face was free from the weight that had changed his entire appearance.
But surgery was only the beginning.
Porky still had to adjust to his new reality.
His body had been through a lot. He was still recovering, still learning what it felt like to move forward without the enormous burden he’d carried for so long.
But little by little, his rescuers began seeing the dog underneath it all.
A sweet senior.
A dog who still wanted affection.
A dog who still had plenty of life left.
And that was the next challenge.
Porky didn’t just need medical care.
He needed a home.
Someone willing to look past his difficult beginning and give him the peaceful life he had never had.
Eventually, someone did.
Porky was adopted.
And suddenly, his world became almost unrecognizable.
The frightened stray now had toys.
He had naps.
He had car rides.
He had plenty of snuggles.
And he even had a feline sister named Winnie.
His new family gave him affectionate nicknames like Pork Man, Pork Bun, and Mr. Pork. They said it would be difficult to guess everything he had endured simply by watching him enjoy his new life.
That’s the beautiful part.
The enormous growth is gone.
But so is the lonely life that came with it.
Porky no longer has to wander the streets wondering where his next safe place will be.
He has a bed.
He has people who love him.
He has a cat to watch the world with.
And he has toys waiting whenever he’s ready to play.
For years, the thing everyone noticed first was the enormous mass on his face.
Now there’s something else to notice.
His personality.
His sweetness.
His happiness.
His second chance.
Porky’s story is a reminder that sometimes a rescue doesn’t just save a dog’s life.
It gives people the opportunity to finally see the dog that was hiding underneath all that suffering.
And Porky was worth seeing.
He was worth saving.
Now, instead of carrying an enormous burden, this little senior has something much better to carry:
A toy.
A heart full of love.
And a whole lot of happy years still ahead.
