Peggy-Sue couldn’t even manage a few steps without collapsing.

At 32.5 kilograms, the British bulldog was carrying so much weight that everyday movements had become a struggle.

She was uncomfortable, easily overheated and in desperate need of help.

But this sweet dog wasn’t destined to spend the rest of her life struggling.

With dedicated rescuers, a patient foster carer and a family willing to give her a chance, Peggy-Sue’s life was about to change dramatically.

A Dog Who Desperately Needed Help

Peggy-Sue arrived at the RSPCA’s West Hatch Animal Centre in Somerset, England, in July 2025.

Her condition was heartbreaking.

She was so heavy that staff had to carry her in a crate from their van to her kennel.

She also suffered from an ingrowing claw, infected skin folds and an extremely low tolerance for summer heat.

To help prevent her from overheating, the team kept a fan blowing into her kennel.

It was clear that Peggy-Sue needed more than a comfortable place to sleep. She needed a carefully managed plan to improve her health and quality of life.

Thankfully, her rescuers were ready to help.

Small Steps Led to a Remarkable Transformation

Peggy-Sue began her weight-loss journey with a foster carer who gradually increased her exercise.

There was no overnight miracle.

Instead, her progress came through patience, consistency and the right care.

She eventually lost her first five kilograms while in foster care, making it easier for her to move around.

Then, during the RSPCA’s 2025 Adoptober campaign, Peggy-Sue found something even more important than a healthier routine.

She found a family.

Emmie and Andy, a couple from Taunton, welcomed her into their home after deciding their dog, Mr. Woo, needed a companion.

The couple had recently lost their beloved 16-year-old rescue dog, Jack-Jack, and hoped another rescue could bring happiness back into their home.

Peggy-Sue turned out to be exactly the dog they needed.

Her New Family Helped Her Find Her Feet

When Peggy-Sue first arrived at her new home, she could manage only short bursts of activity.

Her new family continued the work her foster carer had started, following a strict diet and exercise plan to help her gradually become stronger.

And the results were wonderful.

Peggy-Sue eventually reached a much healthier weight of 23.5 kilograms, shedding nine kilograms altogether.

The difference wasn’t just visible on the scales.

She began enjoying walks, car rides and adventures with her family. She also discovered a particular love for water, happily splashing around in rock pools and streams.

The dog who once struggled to take a few steps without collapsing was now exploring the world around her.

For Emmie and Andy, watching her transformation has been incredibly rewarding.

Peggy-Sue is their sixth rescue dog, and they believe adopting rescue animals has brought tremendous joy into their lives.

Every Rescue Dog Deserves a Chance

Peggy-Sue’s journey highlights how obesity can seriously affect a dog’s mobility, comfort and overall health.

Weight management should always be approached carefully, with veterinary guidance and an exercise plan suited to the individual dog’s condition.

For Peggy-Sue, gradual changes and consistent support helped her regain strength and discover activities she could enjoy.

Her story also reminds prospective pet owners that rescue dogs come in all shapes, sizes and circumstances.

Some need extra medical attention, patience or lifestyle adjustments before they can thrive.

But those challenges don’t make them any less deserving of love.

Today, Peggy-Sue has a family who celebrates her progress and includes her in their adventures.

She’s healthier, happier and finally enjoying the life every dog deserves.

Once, Peggy-Sue struggled just to stand. Now, she’s exploring streams, enjoying walks and discovering what it means to be truly loved.
