For more than 500 days, Joey waited for someone to choose him.

The sweet pit bull mix had spent over a year at the Niagara County SPCA in New York, watching other dogs leave for their forever homes while he remained behind.

The shelter staff loved him, but they knew affection and attention couldn’t replace what he truly needed: a family of his own.

Then, at last, the right people came along.

And when Joey’s big day finally arrived, his shelter friends made sure he left feeling like the king he was.

A Sweet Dog Who Waited Too Long

Joey arrived at the shelter in 2019 as a stray. Despite being described as handsome, calm, and loving, he struggled to find an adopter.

He needed a home without small children or other pets, which narrowed the number of families who could provide the right environment for him.

As the days turned into months, Joey became one of the shelter’s longest residents.

The staff and volunteers grew attached to him, but they could see that he wanted more than shelter life could offer.

He needed a warm bed, quiet evenings, and people who would love him every day.

Kimberly LaRussa, founder of Sweet Buffalo to the Rescue, was determined to help Joey find that future.

She shared videos of him online, hoping someone would see the wonderful dog the shelter team already knew.

One of those videos eventually reached Daryl Koczaja and Melissa Leuer.

Melissa later recalled watching Joey’s videos repeatedly, wishing someone would give him a chance.

She never imagined that someone would be her.

The Family Joey Had Been Waiting For

When Daryl and Melissa met Joey in person, the connection was immediate.

Joey ran straight toward Daryl and covered him with kisses.

The couple felt that he belonged with them, as though he had been waiting for their arrival all along.

Finally, after more than 500 days, Joey had a family.

But before he left the shelter, his caregivers wanted to give him a farewell worthy of the occasion.

A Royal Goodbye Filled With Love

The shelter had developed a special tradition for dogs heading to their new homes.

Staff members wanted every departing dog to understand just how much they mattered, so they created send-offs filled with affection and celebration.

For Joey, they chose colorful leis.

One by one, the flower garlands gathered around his neck, turning the beloved shelter resident into the star of his own little celebration.

The sight of Joey wearing all those leis was especially touching. Each one represented someone who had cared for him during his long wait.

The farewell was bittersweet. The staff were thrilled that Joey had found his family, but saying goodbye to a dog they had loved for so long was emotional.

Still, they knew this was exactly the ending they had hoped for.

Joey wasn’t leaving because they loved him any less. He was leaving because he had finally found people who could give him everything they wanted for him.

A New Life at Last

Adjusting to a new home took Joey a little time, but he soon began settling in with Daryl and Melissa.

His new family shared that they adored him and were happily spoiling him. Joey adapted quickly and showed them just how much love he had to give.

After spending so many months waiting for his chance, he could finally enjoy the simple comforts every dog deserves.

Joey’s story is a reminder that shelter dogs can wait a long time for the right match.

Some need a particular home environment, while others are simply overlooked as potential adopters pass by.

But the right family can change everything.

For Joey, 500 days of waiting ended with kisses, colorful leis, and a ride toward a brighter future.

And his story leaves us with one powerful reminder: Every dog deserves to be someone’s first choice — no matter how long it takes to find them.
