When Hiền and her husband booked a cozy Airbnb in the mountains of Port Angeles, Washington, they were expecting beautiful scenery, a peaceful getaway and some time to unwind.
What they didn’t expect was to fall head over heels for a fluffy, four-legged host who had absolutely no intention of letting them spend the weekend alone.
The moment the couple arrived, an excited yellow Labrador came running toward them. At first, they weren’t sure what to make of their enthusiastic greeter.
Then they checked the guest booklet.
It explained that the property owner’s Labrador, Pearl, was famously friendly and loved visitors.
As it turned out, that description barely did her justice.
Pearl wasted no time making herself at home with her new friends.
She nudged Hiền’s hand for attention, pressed her backside against her for pets and bounced around excitedly, eager to turn their arrival into playtime.
She even found a firewood log near the bonfire pit and carried it over, inviting Hiền to join in the fun.
It was clear that Pearl had decided these guests were worth getting to know.
And she wasn’t about to let them forget it.

Whenever Hiền went inside the guesthouse, Pearl would wait outside the door until she came back.
She seemed perfectly content to spend her time nearby, keeping an eye on her temporary best friend.
The next morning, Pearl was ready to start all over again.
At 6:30 a.m., she was already there to greet Hiền, looking up at her with an expression that was almost impossible to resist.
Hiền suspected Pearl knew exactly what she was doing.
“She knew her sad face would get us outside playing with her,” she recalled.
And honestly, how could anyone say no to that?
Pearl spent the weekend showing the couple around the property, running around with boundless enthusiasm and making sure there was never a dull moment.
Her playful personality transformed what was already a beautiful mountain escape into something much more memorable.
For Hiền, the connection was immediate.
She fell in love with Pearl’s silliness, loyalty and affectionate nature. Having the friendly Labrador around made the remote cabin feel less lonely and the entire experience more special.
But every vacation eventually comes to an end.
When it was time for Hiền and her husband to pack their bags and leave, saying goodbye to Pearl turned out to be the hardest part.
The dog followed them to their car. She even stood by Hiền’s side of the vehicle, watching as they backed away from the property.
It was a heartbreaking sight for guests who had arrived as strangers and were leaving with a dog-shaped hole in their hearts.
Hiền later admitted that the goodbye was one of the saddest moments of her entire trip.
Pearl, however, was familiar with this routine. After her new friends departed, she returned to her comfortable bed in the main house and waited for the next guests to arrive.
Her affectionate welcome would begin all over again.
Hiền and her husband haven’t returned to the Airbnb yet, but they still miss Pearl and hope to see her again someday.
And who could blame them?
Some vacations are remembered for the places we visit. Others stay with us because of the unexpected connections we make along the way.
Pearl may have been the property’s resident dog, but for one couple, she became the highlight of their entire getaway.
She didn’t need fancy tricks or a complicated plan to win them over. All she needed was a wagging tail, a playful spirit and a willingness to keep showing up.
Sometimes, the best part of a trip isn’t the view outside your window.
It’s the furry friend waiting just outside your door, hoping you’ll come out for one more game.
