Every shelter dog dreams of a forever home. But what if that “forever home” was the shelter itself?
Prepare for the truly extraordinary tale of Gumby, a hound mix whose Houdini-like antics led to a hilarious and heartwarming realization by the staff at the Charleston Animal Society (CAS).
Gumby first arrived at CAS as a stray in September 2014. What followed was a year of baffling escapes and returns.
Adopted out not once, not twice, but eleven times, Gumby consistently found his way back to the shelter’s doorstep.
His first adoption lasted only three days, the next just six. Despite the staff’s best efforts to warn new families about his escape artistry, Gumby always managed to reappear.
Sometimes he was brought back by a Good Samaritan, other times by animal control, and frequently, by his frustrated adopters. He even busted through a screen door once!
The CAS staff was at their wit’s end trying to find him a suitable home.
But then, a profound realization dawned on them: Gumby wasn’t running from his homes; he was running to his home – the shelter!
It turned out, Gumby loved the attention from the staff, was comfortable in the environment, and perhaps, felt he had a purpose there.

Gumby officially became a permanent resident and even earned the honorary title of “General Manager” of the Charleston Animal Society.
He now helps the team with behavioral demonstrations, plays with other dogs, and spreads his unique brand of love.
It’s not a traditional home, but it’s the place Gumby clearly always wanted to be, where he found his true calling.
And if that wasn’t enough, the staff recently made another incredible discovery: the serum from Gumby’s blood possesses healing properties, and he’s now a blood donor for kittens with eye infections!
Gumby truly is a perfect fit for the Charleston Animal Society, proving that sometimes, a dog’s purpose is far grander than just being a family pet.
His story is a beautiful reminder that every animal has a unique personality and a special place in the world.
