The tears are understandable, especially when you know the odds stacked against dogs like him.
Nearly 4 million homeless dogs enter shelters in the U.S. each year, and only about half are adopted. Pit bulls have it even worse.
They account for about one-third of all shelter dogs, but only about one in 600 ever finds a permanent home.
Many municipal shelters still euthanize pit bulls on intake, making the outlook especially grim.
Why? Stigma. Studies have shown that when a dog is labeled as a pit bull, adoption chances drop dramatically.
Arizona State University even found that removing breed labels tripled adoption rates.
