For a 5-year-old terrier-mix named Remy, one of those moments came when paramedics from FDNY spotted her alone and emaciated, stumbling along Rockaway Beach, Queens.
Her body was frail, malnourished, urine-stained — a heartbreaking sign she’d likely been living on the streets for some time.

They gently assessed her — noting her underweight condition and signs of prolonged neglect.
Her first weeks were all about recovery: careful, measured meals to restore her weight, vet care to stabilize her, and patient nurturing to rebuild trust.
In time, something beautiful began to emerge.
Remy — once fragile and barely able to lift her head — started showing glimpses of the dog she could be.
She learned to enjoy light exercise.
She discovered the joy of gentle pats and soft words.
In a touching turn, she even took to a treadmill — a unique tool provided by a local company visiting the shelter — and showed a spark of excitement many thought long extinguished.
Behind those small signs of recovery lay a bigger transformation: Remy’s spirit began to heal. She became playful, affectionate, and surprisingly resilient.
Volunteers described her as “sweet and loving,” a dog who craved connection and responded to kindness like sun-soaked petals after rain.
Now, the shelter is looking for a forever home for Remy — a calm, patient home where she could continue her healing and build a new life.
Because while her past holds scars, her future could be full of warmth, companionship, and love.
As the rescue organization suggested, Remy would likely do best in a home without other pets or small children — a place where she’s the sole focus, allowed the space and time to settle in and blossom.
What’s most powerful about Remy’s journey isn’t just the rescue.
