In a rural North Carolina trailer park, a tiny, freezing dog was enduring months of unimaginable neglect.
Chico, a three-year-old Chihuahua, was found chained to an old outdoor trampoline with a short, tangled tether and a bungee cord digging into his neck.
He was alone, severely malnourished, and covered in ticks. His tragic story of suffering has since become a heartwarming tale of rescue, resilience, and the life-changing power of a forever home.
The journey to freedom began in 2024 when fieldworkers from PETA first encountered Chico.
They fitted him with a proper collar, provided him with food, water, and essential medication, and tried everything to convince his owners to bring him inside or surrender him.
The owners refused, and soon after, they moved away, leaving the PETA team worried sick about the little dog’s fate.

Five months later, fate intervened. While working in the same rural area, PETA fieldworker Jake Roos spotted him again.
There was Chico, still chained, this time to an old trampoline. He was a “shell of himself,” with his ribs and hipbones protruding from his severely malnourished body, and he had no food or water available.
The other dogs chained nearby, often driven to aggression by loneliness and confinement, only highlighted Chico’s terrified state.
Recognizing the dire cruelty of the situation, Roos didn’t give up.
He convinced the owner, who had initially refused to surrender him, to finally hand over the pet.
The moment Chico was free, all he could do was curl up and sleep, utterly exhausted from months of struggling to survive.
Chico’s experience perfectly illustrates the devastating effects of chaining.
Dogs left constantly tethered are deprived of veterinary care, exercise, and companionship.
As Roos explained, as social animals, this isolation leads to deep depression and emotional distress.
When Chico first arrived at the rescue, he was so nervous and skittish that he would physically shake.

But with time, safety, and kindness, Chico began to heal. He slowly warmed up to his foster dad and discovered the simple joy of a squeaky donut toy.
In September, his life changed forever. Chico was adopted by a retired woman looking for a companion to fill the void left by her previous dog.
Today, Chico’s life couldn’t be more different. He has gone from sleeping on cold, dirty ground to enjoying constant companionship and the warmth of a loving home.
His new guardian treats him like the true family member he is, ensuring he has cozy sweaters for the winter months.
He loves playing with his toys, eagerly anticipates mealtime, and is always tucked into bed at night.
Chico’s story is a powerful reminder of the incredible dedication of rescue workers and the importance of supporting organizations that fight animal cruelty.
His transformation from an abandoned, suffering dog to a spoiled, happy companion proves that a second chance at life can lead to a lifetime of love.
