Dog parks can be awesome!
They’re fenced-in spots where dogs can run, play, and socialize off-leash. But they’re not for every dog, and knowing a few simple rules makes sure everyone has a good time.
Is Your Dog Ready?
Before you visit, ask yourself:
- Are they old enough? Puppies need to be at least 4 months old and fully vaccinated.
- Are they healthy? All dogs should be up-to-date on vaccines (like bordetella, leptospirosis, canine influenza) and on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
- Are they friendly? Dogs in heat, sick dogs, or those that are shy, nervous, aggressive, or protective of toys/food should stay home.
- Do they listen? Your dog needs to know basic commands like ‘come’ even with distractions.
Check Out the Park First!
Before you bring your dog, visit the park alone. Look for:
- Secure Fencing: Is it tall and sturdy?
- Double Gates: Do they have two gates to prevent escapes?
- Separate Areas: Are there different spaces for big and small dogs?
- Cleanliness: Is it free of trash and dog poop?
- Fresh Water: Is clean water available?
- Attentive Owners: Are other owners paying attention to their dogs? This is super important!

While You’re There, Stay Engaged!
When you’re at the park:
- Watch Your Dog: Keep an eye on them. Don’t get distracted by your phone.
- Step In: If play gets too rough, step in and redirect.
- Know When to Leave: If your dog seems stressed, tired, or overwhelmed, it’s time to go home.
Remember, a dog park isn’t the only way for your dog to have fun.
If it’s not a good fit, that’s okay!
Walks, playdates with trusted friends, or even just quality time with you are all wonderful ways to keep your dog happy and healthy.
Your bond is what matters most!
