One welfare check in La Mesa, California revealed a heartbreaking scene that many animal lovers fear but hope never to witness. On December 29, 2025, officers from the La Mesa Police Department were called to check on the wellbeing of a tenant who hadn’t been seen since December 23.
What they discovered inside a tiny 500‑square‑foot apartment was shocking: about 40 dogs and puppies living in severely unsanitary conditions — filth covering the floors and no signs of proper care for the animals.
