On a chilly March morning in New York City, Officer Jared Desalvo of the NYPD Harbor Unit was on patrol when a call came in: a small dog was spotted swimming in circles in the East River near the South Street Seaport. Responding swiftly, Desalvo and his team navigated their boat toward the struggling pup.
Despite the frigid waters and strong currents, the dog, a Maltese later named Hudson, was still paddling, though clearly exhausted.
Desalvo reached out and gently pulled Hudson aboard. She was shivering, scared, and wearing a bright pink harness—but had no tags or microchip. Wrapped in blankets, she was transported to the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) for evaluation and care.
At the ACC, Hudson was treated for a respiratory infection and placed in foster care. Staff described her as sociable and well-liked, despite the mystery surrounding her origins. Weeks passed, but no one came forward to claim her.
Desalvo, who had been following Hudson’s progress, saw an opportunity. Recognizing the bond they had formed during the rescue, he decided to adopt her. “She’ll be a great part of our family,” he said, embracing the chance to give Hudson a second chance at life.

Now, Hudson is settling into her new home with Desalvo, his wife, and their two children, Salvatore and Stella. The family is overjoyed, and Hudson has found the loving environment she deserves.
This tale serves as a reminder of the profound impact compassion and quick action can have. Thanks to Officer Desalvo and his team, a little dog named Hudson was rescued from peril and now enjoys the warmth and security of a forever home.
