Meet Chewy, a 7-year-old Shih Tzu who was found wandering the streets of Austin, Texas, alone and abandoned. Priscilla Duran, the executive director of The Philomena, an assisted living facility in Kyle, Texas, discovered him and, despite locating his original owners through his microchip, they refused to take him back.

On the very day she found Chewy, Duran was involved in a serious car accident. Yet, she remained committed to caring for this little dog. Initially concerned about how her two senior rescue dogs would react, she was relieved when one warmly welcomed Chewy.

Duran began bringing Chewy to work, where he quickly became a beloved figure among the residents. Known for his stylish bow ties and sunglasses, Chewy lifts spirits, promotes physical activity, and has a notably positive effect on residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia—encouraging interaction and emotional connection even among those previously withdrawn or non-verbal.

Chewy’s presence has transformed lives. He’s not just a pet; he’s a healer, a friend, and a source of joy. His story is a testament to the incredible impact one small dog can have when given a second chance.
