In the heart of an Australian animal shelter, a dog’s story became a testament to patience, perseverance, and the belief that every creature, no matter how long it takes, deserves a second chance.

His name is Olympus, a beautiful Greyhound who waited 1,459 days—that’s exactly four years—for a home.

Olympus wasn’t an easy case. He wasn’t a bad dog by any means, but the staff at Greyhound Rescue understood he had “big feelings.”

When he got excited, he had a habit of grabbing at fabric and clothing. To many potential adopters, this might have seemed like a deal-breaker, a quirky behavior that made him a less-than-ideal candidate.

Because of this, he was passed over again and again, watching countless other dogs come and go while he remained behind the shelter walls.

But the compassionate team at Greyhound Rescue didn’t give up on him. Instead, they saw his potential and decided to invest in his future. Using a grant for rehabilitation, they began working with Olympus on his behavior.

They focused on helping him manage his big emotions, teaching him how to self-regulate and calm down after moments of high excitement.

The transformation was remarkable.

In less than a year, the dog with the “big feelings” showed a night-and-day difference, becoming a much more likely candidate for adoption.

And then, his luck changed in the most incredible way. A person contacted the shelter with a very specific request: they wanted to adopt the longest-term resident.

It was a sign that Olympus’s long wait was finally coming to an end.

After a few successful meet-and-greets, the adopter took Olympus home on a trial basis, a final step before his new life could officially begin.

The sky is crying happy tears for you, Lympie 🥹🌧️ A few weeks ago the perfect application came along for Olympus, one of our hounds who have been at the rescue centre the longest. And after a few meets we knew this was the right match for him. After waiting 1459 days we never gave up hope and he is finally going to his new home. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen and believed in Lympie for many years. 😭 Special thanks to Monika from Understanding Canine for all her expertise, compassion and guidance over the past year. Your work with Olympus has been life-changing. And thank you to staff and volunteers for continuing the work that Monika has implemented. 💛 It’s bittersweet since we know him so well after all these years, but we are so happy he finally gets to experience being in a loving home which he so so deserves. Please consider adopting a long-timer. We still have some long-time residents that are deserving of love. While they might need a little extra understanding or care.. Witnessing their transformation and knowing you made it happen is a reward beyond measure!
