In the heart of Texas, where the stray dog population is overwhelming and shelters are stretched thin, one organization is making a remarkable difference. Three Little Pitties Rescue, based in Friendswood, has transformed humble sheds into “mutternity suites”—safe, serene spaces for pregnant stray dogs to give birth and care for their puppies.

The initiative was made possible through a partnership with Tito’s Handmade Vodka’s “Vodka for Dog People” program, which provided funding and volunteer support. Together, they revitalized the rescue’s facilities, adding features like lighting, dog doors, grooming rooms, and treat jars to create a welcoming environment for expectant canine mothers. On the day of the transformation, a pregnant dog gave birth to nine puppies, who moved into the newly finished suite.

Alayna Matranga Goodson, the executive director of Three Little Pitties Rescue, emphasized the importance of providing a safe space for these dogs. “We’ve come across pregnant and nursing dog moms who have tried to find a safe place to give birth, whether that be in a pile of trash, underneath a dumpster…”.

The impact of these mutternity suites is profound. They not only provide a safe haven for dogs like Lucy, who was found living under a dumpster with her newborn puppies, but also offer a chance for these animals to receive medical care and socialization before being adopted into loving homes. The rescue’s efforts are a testament to the power of community and compassion in addressing the challenges faced by stray animals.

For those inspired by this story, there are many ways to help. Donations and foster volunteers are always needed to continue this life-saving work.
