A small dog named Manchis just proved you don’t have to be big to be mighty.
When someone threw a lit stick of dynamite into the yard of journalist Carlos Alberto Mesias Zarate’s home in Huaral, Peru, Manchis sprang into action—and potentially saved 10 lives.
It was just after 1 a.m. on August 24 when surveillance video caught a hooded figure approaching Zarate’s home and tossing the explosive into the courtyard.
The dynamite was the kind used in landmines. As the fuse whispered its hiss, chaos could’ve erupted.
But Manchis, a 25-pound Cocker Spaniel mix with heart, didn’t just bark.
She darted forward, pawed at the danger, and then did the unthinkable—she grabbed the fuse in her mouth, chewed, and extinguished it.
Her owner says that what she did saved the family.
Zarate lives in a house with 10 people and three other dogs. Thanks to Manchis’s quick instincts, no one was harmed.

Her vocal cords were badly damaged—her bark has been replaced by a low rasp.
Yet even without her usual bark, she remains alert, protective, and watching.
Manchis’s owner, Zarate, says he isn’t surprised, given her loyalty. He said, “She chewed it and chewed it, and saved our lives.”
