Sometimes what looks like abandonment turns into a heartbreaking rescue — and that’s exactly what happened recently in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, when animal welfare volunteers discovered a mother Labrador retriever mix and her seven newborn puppies chained up amid rapidly rising floodwaters. The scene was dire and the stakes were high, but thanks to quick action and compassion, most of this dog family’s story ended with relief and a hopeful new beginning.
On January 9, local animal advocates learned about a dog and her pups who had been left chained to a doghouse on a property that was quickly filling with cold, deep water. As the floodwaters reached the base of the doghouse, the mother dog — later estimated to be about 4 years old — and her tiny litter were forced to stand in the rising water to stay above the cold and wet ground.
