It was a bitterly cold night in Erie, Pennsylvania, when local police answered a call that would lead to one of the most heartbreaking — and hopeful — animal rescue moments of the winter. Under a bridge, amid frigid temperatures that hovered between about 4 and 23 degrees Fahrenheit, officers found a small crate. Inside was a six-month-old Siberian husky puppy, caked in filth and frostbite, so weak that rescuers first believed she might already be dead.
The puppy — later named Aimee, after the police dispatcher who first took the emergency call — was discovered on January 19, 2026. Her body was almost motionless, her heart rate shockingly low, her tiny frame covered in feces and urine. Shelter staff later described her as “literally a rack of bones,” weighing just about 15.2 pounds — an extremely underweight figure for a dog her age.
In that moment, it looked as though Aimee’s story was ending before it ever truly began. Her temperature had dropped to dangerous levels, and she showed the classic signs of hypothermia and frostbite — painful tissue damage that can occur when dogs are exposed to extreme cold for extended periods. Even breeds bred for cold weather, like Siberian huskies, can succumb if they’re left outside without proper shelter, warmth, or care.
Yet something inside Aimee wasn’t ready to give up.
ANNA Shelter, the animal welfare organization that took her in, sprang into action. Immediately upon her arrival, they wrapped her in warm blankets, gently dried her fur, administered medications, and began the slow process of warming her body while monitoring her vital signs. Within hours — after more than a day of neglect and near-freezing conditions — Aimee began to show signs of life. She lifted her head, stretched her legs, even managed to respond with tiny motions that spoke volumes about her resilience.
Those first 24 hours were critical: she began eating, passing waste — both major indicators that her body was fighting back. Despite major organ damage, veterinarians and shelter staff remained cautiously hopeful. Aimee was alive, and she was demonstrating the will to survive.
Over the next several days, Aimee continued to improve incrementally. Videos shared by the shelter showed her taking shaky steps on her own — wobbly, but determined — a stark contrast to the unresponsive pup who had been found under the bridge. Each small movement was a triumph, a sign that her body was responding to care and that her spirit was still fighting.
Shelter staff have made it clear that Aimee’s recovery will be a long road. Frostbite can have lasting consequences, including tissue loss or nerve damage, and her weakened state means she needs ongoing medical support, nutrition, and lots of tender, patient care. Yet rescue teams and supporters alike continue to believe that her best days could still be ahead.
Beyond her physical challenges, Aimee’s story has resonated because it’s a powerful reminder of both vulnerability and resilience. On the one hand, her discovery highlights the reality of animal neglect — especially during harsh winter weather — and the importance of community awareness and action.
On the other, it shows what can happen when caring humans step in at the right moment. Aimee was found just in time.
Police in Erie are now working with ANNA Shelter’s cruelty team to seek justice in her case, reminding animal lovers that neglect and abandonment carry consequences.
And for Aimee herself, each day brings a new milestone: a little more strength, a few more steps, and the possibility that she will one day find a loving forever home where warmth, care, and joy replace the cold and fear she once knew.
