The heart of a shelter animal often carries a tale of resilience, but for Macchiato, a sweet pit bull-terrier mix, her story took an unexpected and poignant turn.

After six months in a loving adoptive home, she was sadly returned to the Best Friends Animal Society shelter in N.Y.C. due to her family’s demanding work schedules.

While heartbreaking, this return unveiled a devastating truth: Macchiato had aggressive, inoperable terminal cancer that had already spread.

Despite the grim diagnosis, the dedicated shelter staff believed Macchiato still had life to live, moments of joy she deserved to experience outside of a kennel.

And that’s when a familiar face stepped in.

Mo Hussain, a longtime volunteer with the organization who had previously fostered Macchiato, couldn’t bear to see her spend her final days without the comfort of a true home.

He lovingly agreed to take her in as a “fospice” case – providing foster care specifically for an animal in hospice.

Hussain’s devotion is a testament to the profound impact fostering can have.

He’s committed to filling Macchiato’s remaining time with unparalleled joy, comfort, and dignity, ensuring her final chapter is filled with warmth and love.

As Marlan Roberts, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society’s Pet Lifesaving Center, beautifully articulated, Hussain’s act embodies the crucial role fosters play in supporting shelter animals, especially those most vulnerable.

Macchiato’s story, though bittersweet, champions the power of a second chance and encourages us all to consider opening our homes and hearts to pets in need, proving that even in the face of adversity, love always finds a way.
