Imagine spending nearly two years watching other dogs leave the shelter for their forever homes while you’re still waiting for someone to choose you.
For a French bulldog cross named Delboy, that was life.
He had become the longest-staying resident at an RSPCA animal centre in Lancashire, England. But after almost two years of waiting, something wonderful finally happened.
Two people saw his story and decided he deserved a chance.
And they didn’t just take him home. They took the time to earn his trust first.
A Rescue Dog Who Needed Someone Patient
Delboy arrived at the RSPCA’s Longview Animal Centre in Stalmine, Lancashire, in October 2024.
He had been signed over to the charity because of welfare concerns and needed a fresh start.
Although Delboy was affectionate with people he already knew, he struggled with unfamiliar faces, particularly men.
Building trust wasn’t something that could happen overnight.
He needed patience, understanding, and people willing to respect his boundaries.
Unfortunately, those challenges made finding the right home more difficult.
As months passed, Delboy remained at the centre, eventually becoming its longest-staying resident.
But the shelter staff never stopped hoping that someone would look beyond his difficulties and see the loving dog underneath.
Then Mike and Corrine Saw His Story
Mike and Corrine Neale, a couple from the Fylde coast, came across an appeal from the animal centre.
They already had experience caring for rescue dogs with behavioral challenges, so Delboy’s needs didn’t immediately discourage them.
Instead, they saw a dog who desperately needed a family.
But they understood that bringing a rescue dog home required more than simply falling in love with his photograph.
They visited the centre an incredible 10 times to build a relationship with him.
They also took Delboy on days out and arranged sleepovers at home.
Each visit gave them another opportunity to understand his personality, earn his trust, and discover whether they were the right match.
Their patience eventually paid off.
Delboy finally had a family.

From Shelter Kennel to Family Adventures
Today, Delboy is settling beautifully into his new home.
His favorite activities include going for walks, relaxing on comfortable sofas, enjoying cozy beds, receiving treats, and spending time with the people who love him.
According to Mike, being loved is probably his favorite pastime.
And his new life is already filled with exciting experiences.
After just a little over a month with his new family, Delboy had already enjoyed his first holiday in Northumberland.
Mike and Corrine are looking forward to many more adventures together.
Mike explained that they chose Delboy because he desperately needed a forever home. He also praised the Longview staff for being patient, helpful, and honest about the dog’s individual needs.
For the couple, giving Delboy a new life has been incredibly rewarding.
Sometimes, Love Takes a Little Longer
Hannah Mainds from the RSPCA’s Blackpool and North Lancashire Branch praised Mike and Corrine for the effort they made.
She explained that they worked closely with the rescue team to ensure the adoption was the right fit.
She also pointed out that some rescue dogs need considerably more time, attention, and patience than people initially expect.
Delboy’s story proves exactly that.
Not every rescue dog will immediately run into your arms or feel comfortable in a new home.
Some need time to understand that they’re finally safe.
And sometimes, the most meaningful adoptions happen when someone is willing to wait.
Every Rescue Dog Deserves a Chance
Delboy spent nearly two years waiting for someone to see his potential.
Now, he has comfortable beds, exciting walks, wonderful treats, and two people committed to giving him the life he deserves.
His story is a reminder that the perfect rescue dog isn’t always the easiest one.
Sometimes, they’re simply the ones who need someone willing to believe in them.
After nearly two years of waiting, Delboy finally has what every dog deserves: a family that chose him, trusted him, and gave him a place to call home.
