For years, a beagle named Tom Collins lived a life of total sensory deprivation. One of 34 dogs rescued from a horrific hoarding case, Tom’s entire existence had been confined to a cramped cage in a pitch-black garage.

He didn’t know the feel of a soft bed, the taste of a treat, or the kindness of a human hand. To Tom, the world was a cold, dark floor, and human interaction was nothing but a threat.

When he first arrived at Border Tails Rescue in Illinois, the trauma was written all over his face. He didn’t wag his tail or bark for attention; instead, he cowered under desks, trembling at the mere sight of a stranger.
