They were deep in the forest when they noticed her.

A tiny dog.

Skinny.

Alone.

And somehow still friendly.

Fabiola Franyutti and her hiking group had traveled into the woods near Iztaccíhuatl mountain in Mexico when the little dog suddenly appeared.

Nobody knew where she’d come from.

Nobody knew how long she’d been there.

But one thing was obvious.

She needed help.

The dog was so emaciated that Fabiola immediately knew something wasn’t right.

Yet despite everything she had apparently been through, the pup wasn’t afraid of the strangers.

Quite the opposite.

She walked right over.

Then she started following them.

She curled up near their feet.

She happily accepted snacks.

And she stayed close as the group continued along the trail.

Fabiola couldn’t stop wondering about her.

Who had left this little dog out here?

How long had she been surviving on her own?

And why was she so trusting?

Then Fabiola made herself a promise.

If the dog followed her all the way to the end of the trail, she’d take her home.

So the hike continued.

And the dog followed.

Step after step.

She never wandered away.

She never turned back.

She simply stayed beside the woman she had apparently decided to trust.

When they finally reached the car, Fabiola kept her promise.

She took the dog home.

And she gave her a name:

Shanti.

But there was something Fabiola couldn’t ignore.

Shanti was frighteningly thin.

So she rushed her to a veterinarian.

That’s when the story took a heartbreaking turn.

Shanti was diagnosed with TVT, a rare transmissible cancer that occurs only in dogs. Fabiola could only assume that Shanti’s previous owners may have abandoned her after learning she was sick.

Suddenly, that lonely dog in the forest made a little more sense.

She hadn’t simply been wandering around.

She may have been abandoned when she needed help the most.

And yet…

She kept going.

She survived.

And somehow, she found Fabiola.

The good news was that Shanti’s condition was treatable.

Her veterinarians started chemotherapy.

Then came the waiting.

Treatment after treatment.

Day after day.

And slowly, Shanti began fighting her way back.

Just three months later, she was cancer-free.

But the transformation didn’t stop there.

As Shanti gained weight, her energy returned.

And so did the personality that had been hiding beneath all that exhaustion.

She became affectionate.

Gentle.

Loving.

Fabiola described her as the kindest, softest dog.

Think about that.

After being left alone in the woods…

After becoming dangerously thin…

After battling cancer…

Shanti still had love to give.

She could have become fearful of people.

Instead, she chose to trust one.

She could have stopped following those hikers.

Instead, she kept walking.

And that decision may have saved her life.

Because sometimes a rescue doesn’t begin when someone walks into an animal shelter.

Sometimes it begins in the middle of nowhere.

With a lonely dog taking one uncertain step after another behind a stranger.

Shanti didn’t know where Fabiola was going.

She didn’t know what would happen next.

But she followed anyway.

Maybe she simply knew she couldn’t survive alone.

Or maybe, in some remarkable way, she sensed that this particular person was different.

Whatever the reason, Shanti made her choice.

And Fabiola made hers.

Today, they have something neither one expected when that hike began.

A second chance.

For Shanti, it meant surviving.

For Fabiola, it meant finding a new best friend.

And perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of the whole story.

Fabiola went into the forest for a hike.

She came home with a dog.

And that little dog came home with something much more precious:

A future.
