When Salem arrived at a rescue in Mississippi, everyone knew she needed help.
She had been surrendered to a neighbor in a rural area after her previous family decided they no longer wanted her. By the time she was rescued, Salem was malnourished, injured and dealing with several types of worms.
Her rescuers had plenty to worry about.
But there was one thing absolutely no one knew.
Salem was pregnant.
And not only was she pregnant—she was carrying one enormous puppy.
Salem’s New Beginning
After being taken in by Happy Tails Canine Rescue, Salem’s first priority was getting healthy.
She needed veterinary care and treatment before she could begin the next chapter of her life.
Despite everything she had been through, Salem quickly captured people’s hearts.
Once the rescue shared her story online, potential adopters began showing interest in giving her a home.
Eventually, Salem was adopted on October 26, with the understanding that her new family would temporarily foster her while the rescue handled her upcoming medical care.
Her spay was scheduled for November 8.
Nobody expected that appointment to turn into one of the biggest surprises of Salem’s life.
The Vet Had Unexpected News
When the veterinarian began preparing Salem for her spay, they discovered something completely unexpected.
She was heavily pregnant.
In fact, the veterinarian estimated that she was only a few days away from giving birth.
The news stunned everyone.
Salem hadn’t looked pregnant.
There was no obvious belly to suggest that she was carrying puppies, and neither the rescue team nor her new family had suspected anything.
But there was still another surprise waiting.
The veterinarian performed an X-ray to determine how many puppies Salem was carrying.
The answer was just one.
And that single puppy was apparently very, very large.
One Puppy. One Very Crowded Uterus.
Most dog pregnancies involve multiple puppies, so discovering that Salem was carrying only one was already unusual.
A pregnancy involving a single puppy is known as a singleton pregnancy.
In Salem’s case, there was a particularly striking reason the puppy had gone unnoticed.
The enormous puppy was taking up essentially her entire uterus.
Suddenly, the mystery of Salem’s pregnancy made a little more sense.
There simply wasn’t a litter of puppies moving around inside her.
There was one.
And that one puppy was growing into quite the heavyweight.
Everyone Waited for the Birth
Salem’s new family was understandably shocked by the discovery.
But they were also relieved.
The situation meant Salem wasn’t about to give birth to a large litter unexpectedly. Instead, there was one puppy to prepare for.
The family agreed to foster the puppy until she was old enough to be adopted.
Then, just five days after the pregnancy was discovered, Salem gave birth.
And out came Astrid.
She wasn’t exactly the tiny, delicate newborn puppy everyone might have imagined.
Astrid was remarkably large—and immediately earned a reputation as one of the biggest puppies anyone around her had ever seen.
Her fluffy appearance even reminded the rescue team of a little polar bear.
A Puppy Who Needed Her Own Family
For the moment, Astrid had exactly what she needed most: her mother.
Salem’s new family planned to keep the pair together while Astrid grew big enough to find her own permanent home.
But keeping Astrid forever wasn’t possible.
The family already had two other pets and two children, so eventually, the giant puppy would need a family of her own.
Fortunately, Astrid wasn’t going to have to face that transition alone.
The rescue remained committed to finding her the right home.
And after everything Salem had endured, knowing her puppy would have a chance at a happy life made the unexpected pregnancy feel like an especially beautiful twist.
From Abandoned to Loved
Salem’s story began with heartbreak.
She had been unwanted, left with a neighbor and arrived at rescue malnourished, injured and carrying parasites.
Then she found people willing to help her.
She found a family willing to temporarily take her in.
And somehow, hidden beneath all the uncertainty, she was carrying one extraordinary surprise.
Astrid’s arrival gave everyone a story they never saw coming.
