It was almost midnight when Andrea and her partner were getting ready to head home after celebrating a friend’s baptism near Michoacán, Mexico.
Then they noticed a dog sitting alone beside a busy road.
The black-and-white stray was curled up near the roadside, seemingly waiting for someone to notice him. Andrea was used to seeing stray dogs in the area, but something about this particular dog immediately caught her attention.
When she and her partner approached him, the dog didn’t run away.
Instead, he kept lifting one paw toward them.
Again.
And again.
It was almost as if he were trying to have a conversation.
Andrea reached down to pet him, and the sweet dog continued offering his paw. He was incredibly trusting for a dog who appeared to have been living on the streets.
The couple initially wondered whether he belonged to someone nearby. They checked around, but no one came forward to claim him.
And leaving him beside a busy highway at that hour suddenly felt impossible.
So they made a decision.
They were taking him with them.
Around 12:30 a.m., Andrea was carrying the dog in her arms. By the next day, he was riding comfortably in their car.
They named him Julián.
Despite being a stray, Julián was remarkably affectionate. He loved being petted and would even roll onto his back for attention. But he continued doing one particular thing that had first caught Andrea’s attention that night.
He kept offering his paw.
The next morning, the couple finally discovered why.
Julián’s paw was injured.
The gesture that had seemed almost like a charming little handshake was actually his way of drawing attention to something that hurt.
He had been trying to tell them he needed help.
Fortunately, Julián was now with people who were listening.
The couple took care of his injured paw and gave him time to recover. What they hadn’t expected was how quickly the gentle dog would become part of their lives.
Their original plan had been to help Julián, get him healthy and eventually find him a loving home.
But spending time with him changed those plans.
The sweet stray had already found a way into their hearts.
After only a few days together, Andrea and her partner realized they couldn’t imagine sending him away.
So they decided to make the rescue permanent.
Julián would stay.
The dog who had once been alone beside a dangerous road now had a home, people who loved him and a safe place to rest.
And perhaps most remarkably, the same paw that had helped him ask for help became part of the story that led him to his forever family.
Julián couldn’t explain where he had come from or how long he had been surviving on his own.
He didn’t need to.
That night, he found a couple willing to stop.
He lifted his paw.
They listened.
And instead of driving away, they opened their hearts—and eventually, their home.
Today, Julián no longer has to wonder whether someone will notice him.
He has people who do.
And he never has to ask for help from the side of a highway again.
