The moment one family saw Mango’s face, they couldn’t stop thinking about him.

The young Spanish Greyhound was standing alone at a quiet train station in Spain, looking tired, thin and uncertain. At only about a year old, Mango had already experienced more hardship than any dog should.

He had been abandoned with no family to protect him and no idea what would happen next.

Mango was discovered alone at the station and taken in by Grateful Greyhounds, a rescue organization dedicated to helping Galgos find better lives.

The rescue arranged for Mango to travel from Spain to the United States, giving him the opportunity to leave his difficult past behind.

Mango’s situation is sadly not unusual for Spanish Greyhounds. Every year, many Galgos enter rescue after hunting season, with some being abandoned or surrendered when they are no longer considered useful.

These dogs often arrive frightened, underweight and unsure of people. But with patience and compassionate care, many eventually discover that humans can be trusted.

Mango was about to learn that lesson himself.

After an eight-hour flight across the Atlantic, Mango finally arrived in his new country.

His family greeted him at the airport, excited to bring him home but understanding that the transition wouldn’t happen overnight.

Everything was unfamiliar: the people, surroundings, smells and sounds.

Stairs, for example, were completely confusing to Mango. He hesitated before each step, unsure of what he was supposed to do.
