For six years, Benny had an important job at Disneyland Resort.
While millions of guests came to the park looking for magic, Benny and his fellow security dogs were quietly working behind the scenes to help keep everyone safe.
Now, after years of dedicated service, the beloved Golden Retriever is officially hanging up his security harness.
And his retirement celebration was every bit as special as he was.
Benny is one of eight security dogs at Disneyland Resort. As he approaches his ninth birthday, he’s beginning a much more relaxed chapter of his life—one filled with his favorite people, plenty of playtime, and, apparently, lots of tennis balls.
During his years on duty, Benny worked throughout the resort with his handler, Kevin. The pair became an especially close team after being matched during the K9 selection process.
Kevin had originally started working at Disneyland as a regular security officer before becoming a K9 handler. When the time came to choose their canine partners, Benny immediately stood out to him.
The connection turned into a partnership that lasted for years.
Together, Benny and Kevin worked in different areas around the resort, helping monitor security at entrances and protecting both guests and Cast Members in public and backstage areas.
But Benny wasn’t exactly the intimidating type.
In fact, his personality was almost the opposite.
Kevin described him as extremely friendly and calm. Benny didn’t typically bark at other dogs, and he wasn’t known for being aggressive.
Instead, he became known for something much more charming: his enormous smile and upbeat personality.
Benny’s many nicknames included “Benny and the Jet,” “Benito,” and the wonderfully fitting “Loaf of Bread.”
Anyone who spent time around him seemed to understand why he became such a favorite.
Kevin said Benny’s happiness had a way of affecting everyone around him. When Benny was in a good mood, it was difficult for the people nearby not to feel happier too.
So when retirement day finally arrived, Disneyland’s security Cast Members made sure Benny received the sendoff he deserved.
Dozens of his colleagues gathered to celebrate him with a special retirement party.
And they knew exactly how to make the occasion memorable.
Benny received hot dogs, tennis balls, and his favorite red chew toy.
For a dog who had spent years helping protect the Happiest Place on Earth, it was a pretty fitting reward.
Disney Parks also paid tribute to Benny, thanking him for what they jokingly described as 49 “dog years” of service.
The celebration wasn’t just about saying goodbye. It was also a chance to recognize the impact Benny had made during his time at the resort.
Even after six years of work, he apparently hasn’t lost his enthusiasm.
Before officially stepping away from his duties, Benny will help train the security dog who will take his place. It’s a fitting final assignment for a veteran K9 who has spent so many years helping his team.
Once that transition is complete, Benny gets to focus on the best part of retirement: spending time at home with Kevin and another dog.
No more security shifts.
No more working around the clock.
Just relaxing, running around, playing, and enjoying life with the person who has been his partner for so many years.
Benny’s retirement is certainly the end of an era for his Disneyland team, but it’s also the beginning of a well-earned new chapter.
After six years of service, the Golden Retriever who helped make countless days safer can finally trade his working harness for a much more comfortable retirement routine.
And if Benny’s giant smile is anything to go by, he’s going to be very good at it.
