Louis had spent six years believing he knew what home meant.

He had a family.

A routine.

People he knew.

Then, suddenly, all of it disappeared.

The Belgian Malinois found himself at a shelter, searching for answers no dog could possibly understand.

And there was something else that made his situation even more heartbreaking.

Louis only has three legs.

Yet somehow, this resilient dog hasn’t allowed any of it to take away his joy.

When Louis arrived at LifeLine Animal Project, rescuers knew he had been through a major upheaval. After spending the first six years of his life with one family, he now had to adjust to an entirely unfamiliar environment.

For a dog who had known one home for so long, the change must have been enormous.

New smells.

New people.

A kennel.

And no familiar family waiting on the other side of the door.

But Louis slowly began showing rescuers who he really was.

He was a gentleman.

He loved to play.

He enjoyed the company of other dogs.

And he was well-behaved in his crate.

His foster mom, Kim Dennis, shared his story after seeing just how special he was.

She knew Louis deserved better than another temporary stop.

He needed someone who would look at his missing leg and see the dog—not the disability.

Because Louis certainly doesn’t seem to think he’s missing anything.

Three legs haven’t stopped him from playing or enjoying life.

And that’s one of the remarkable things about dogs.

They don’t spend their days wondering what they used to have.

They simply figure out how to enjoy what they have now.

Louis appears ready to do exactly that.

Of course, finding the right home for a Belgian Malinois is an important commitment. This is an intelligent, energetic breed that needs an owner prepared to provide structure, engagement, exercise and companionship.

But Louis has already shown rescuers that he’s capable of adapting.

What he needs now is someone willing to give him the chance.

Someone patient enough to let him settle in.

Someone who understands that a shelter can make even a happy dog feel uncertain.

Someone who won’t decide his future based on the fact that he has three legs.

Meet Louis, the amazing tripod, who was just surrendered to the county shelter in Atlanta by a family who had him since he was a puppy. He appears to be a Malinois (no dna test done!), is HW- and six years old. Louis was slow to warm up and trust us, but after he did it was all love and snuggles. #malinois #rescuedog #tripawd @LifeLine Animal Project

Because Louis has already proven something important.

His missing leg hasn’t taken away his personality.

It hasn’t taken away his ability to play.

It hasn’t stopped him from bonding with people.

And it certainly hasn’t stopped him from being a dog.

What happened with his first family remains unclear. Rescuers don’t know exactly why Louis was surrendered after so many years.

But whatever the reason, he shouldn’t have to spend the rest of his life paying the price for it.

He has already lost one home.

Now he needs the last one.

A forever family that understands his needs.

A family that will celebrate his differences instead of seeing them as limitations.

A family that will let him play, relax, explore and simply be Louis.

Because somewhere beyond the shelter walls is a person who won’t see a three-legged Belgian Malinois.

They’ll see a loyal companion.

A playful friend.

A sweet dog who has already overcome more than most people will ever know.

Louis doesn’t need someone to feel sorry for him.

He needs someone to choose him.

And this time, he needs someone who means it when they say:

You’re home.
