Ares doesn’t have a flock of sheep to look after.
But that doesn’t mean this Border Collie is going to sit around without a job.
When two curious kittens recently ventured outside to explore, Ares immediately seemed to decide that they had given him an important responsibility.
He followed closely behind the tiny pair, watching their every move with the kind of intense concentration that only a Border Collie can deliver.
Apparently, these kittens had just become his new flock.
And Ares was taking his assignment very seriously.
Border Collies are famous for their herding instincts, intelligence, and remarkable ability to stay focused on whatever task is in front of them.
For Ares, it seems that keeping track of two adventurous kittens is the perfect substitute for rounding up sheep.
As the kittens wandered around outside, Ares stayed close behind them. His attention never seemed to drift far from his tiny charges.
If one kitten moved, Ares noticed.
If the other wandered in another direction, Ares was watching.
It was almost as if he had appointed himself their personal security detail.
His mom joked about Ares’ newfound occupation, saying they no longer need to throw a ball for him because he has a job.
And judging by the video, he certainly seems satisfied with his new position.
The funniest part is just how seriously Ares appears to take his responsibility. He’s not chasing the kittens around wildly or turning their adventure into a chaotic game.
Instead, he follows them with intense focus, seemingly determined to make sure neither one gets too far away.
Anyone familiar with Border Collies will recognize that familiar stare.
These dogs were bred to work, and their herding instincts can be incredibly strong. When they lock onto something, they can become completely absorbed in the task.
For Ares, that task happens to be two very small cats.
Of course, the kittens don’t exactly look like a traditional flock.
They aren’t moving in a neat group across a pasture. They’re curious, independent, and probably far more interested in exploring their surroundings than listening to their self-appointed herding supervisor.
That may make Ares’ job considerably more challenging.
One viewer perfectly captured the difficulty by joking that two kittens could be harder to herd than 200 sheep.
Another pointed out the amusing contrast between the Border Collie’s intense stare and the kittens’ own apparent willingness to stare right back.
And that’s what makes the whole situation so entertaining.
Ares seems convinced that he’s working.
The kittens seem perfectly happy to do whatever they want.
It’s a classic example of a dog discovering a job that nobody actually asked him to do—but one he has enthusiastically accepted anyway.
For his family, having Ares around may mean they never have to worry too much about where the kittens are wandering. If they venture too far, there’s a good chance their four-legged supervisor will notice.
And if they decide to split up?
Ares may have his paws full.
Still, his determination is undeniably sweet. His behavior shows just how deeply a Border Collie’s instincts can influence the way they interact with the world around them.
Some dogs chase balls.
Some dogs love tug-of-war.
Ares has apparently discovered something even better: herding kittens.
Whether his tiny flock appreciates his efforts is another question entirely.
But one thing is certain.
Ares loves having a job—and these two kittens have given him one he clearly intends to take very seriously.
