For nearly three years, Sadie watched other dogs leave the shelter with their new families.
The five-year-old Collie cross had already endured a difficult beginning.
Rescued from a property in Cornwall where around 200 dogs were being kept in unsuitable outdoor conditions, she was finally safe.
But finding a family of her own proved to be another challenge.
After spending approximately 1,000 days in kennels, staff at the RSPCA began calling her “Britain’s loneliest dog.”
They desperately wanted someone to see what they saw in her.
And eventually, one woman did.

A Long Wait for Someone to Choose Her
Sadie’s journey to a forever home wasn’t straightforward.
After the RSPCA rescued her, legal proceedings meant she couldn’t immediately be offered for adoption.
Even after she was cleared to find a family, the months continued passing without anyone coming forward.
To give her a better chance, shelter staff launched a social media campaign.
They began posting a video of Sadie every day, hoping her personality would eventually reach the right person.
For 82 days, they kept sharing her story.
Then, on day 83, Mabel Edge from Westward Ho! in Devon came across one of the videos.
Something about Sadie immediately caught her attention.
Mabel couldn’t understand how such a sweet-looking dog had spent so long waiting for a home. She began checking the videos regularly to see how Sadie was doing.
Eventually, she mentioned the dog to her partner, Al.
His response changed everything: Why didn’t they go and meet her?
Four Visits Before the Big Goodbye
Mabel and Al didn’t rush into adoption.
They visited Sadie at the RSPCA center four times, giving everyone an opportunity to get comfortable with the idea of a new life together.
The couple understood that Sadie’s difficult past meant she would need patience and understanding.
They gradually noticed her becoming more comfortable around them, revealing the affectionate personality they had hoped to find.
They knew helping her adjust wouldn’t necessarily be easy, but they believed they could offer something better than life in kennels.
Finally, they brought her home.
The journey itself produced a moment Mabel would never forget.
The couple had prepared a comfortable bed for Sadie inside their campervan. But the dog had other ideas.
Instead, she chose to settle in the footwell.
Mabel later described how, from that moment, it felt as though Sadie had always been part of their lives.

Learning What It Means to Be Home
Six months after her adoption, Sadie had settled into family life.
She was enjoying cuddles, treats, and adventures in the campervan. Her new family was also working with a trainer to help her overcome some of her fears.
Her adjustment wasn’t about expecting everything to change overnight. It was about giving her the time and support she needed to feel safe.
And that’s exactly what she deserved.
Sadie’s previous owner received a jail sentence and was banned from owning dogs for life, according to the RSPCA.
The Dog Who Finally Got Her Happy Ending
Sadie’s story is a reminder that some rescue dogs need more than a few days or weeks to find their perfect match.
Sometimes, the right family takes years to discover them.
The RSPCA staff never stopped trying to get Sadie noticed.
Their daily videos eventually reached someone willing to make the journey, visit repeatedly, and open her home.
After nearly three years of waiting, Sadie finally had somewhere to belong.
And for a dog who spent so long watching others leave, that’s a beautiful ending worth celebrating.
