Some moments are so precious because we know we can’t hold on to them forever.
For Samantha Michelle, that reality became painfully clear when her beloved rescue Labrador, Charlotte, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
The news was devastating. But rather than let the days ahead be defined by sadness, Samantha wanted to give her best friend something beautiful to remember—or, at least, one more wonderful experience to share.
She wanted Charlotte to swim.
And thanks to an extraordinary act of kindness, that wish finally came true.
A Lifetime of Love Between a Dog and Her Mom
Charlotte isn’t just a pet to Samantha. She’s been beside her through nearly her entire adult life.
Together, they’ve moved across the country, explored new cities, hiked countless miles, and navigated some of life’s biggest milestones.
As Samantha explained in an update about Charlotte’s health, they had grown up together.
That’s what makes a serious diagnosis so heartbreaking. A dog becomes woven into your everyday life.
They’re there through the ordinary mornings, the difficult days, and the moments you never realize you’ll treasure until you look back.
Then suddenly, the future you imagined together becomes uncertain.
In August, Charlotte was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. Without treatment, she was given an estimated three months to live.
Samantha and Charlotte’s supporters began doing everything they could to help her receive care and gain more precious time.
But Samantha also wanted to make the time they had together count.
A Simple Wish Becomes Something Extraordinary
Samantha turned to the internet for help finding a swimming pool in Los Angeles where Charlotte could enjoy one more swim.
For a Labrador, water can be pure happiness. And for Charlotte, the opportunity meant spending time doing something she loved alongside the person who loved her most.
Thankfully, Swimply, a private pool rental marketplace, stepped forward and gifted Charlotte and Samantha access to a private pool.
The result was a day they could share without worrying about the cost of renting the space.
In the emotional video, Charlotte waded into the water, splashed around, and enjoyed her swim with Samantha nearby.
As the sun began to set, the senior Lab seemed reluctant to let the fun end.
It was a beautiful sight: an older dog enjoying the water, living in the moment, and making one more memory with her favorite person.
For Samantha, it was an opportunity to give Charlotte something meaningful during an incredibly difficult chapter.
Why This Swim Meant So Much
The beauty of Charlotte’s story isn’t simply that she got to swim one more time.
It’s that someone recognized how much that experience mattered to her and worked to make it happen.
When a beloved dog receives a serious diagnosis, there are medical decisions, financial pressures, and difficult emotions to navigate. Through it all, families still want their companions to experience joy.
Sometimes that means a favorite meal. Sometimes it’s a peaceful walk or a cozy afternoon in the sun.
For Charlotte, it was the water.
Her story reminds us that while we can’t control every part of our dogs’ lives, we can cherish the moments we still have together.
Charlotte’s future remains uncertain, but her swim gave Samantha another beautiful memory to hold close.
And perhaps that’s the lesson her story leaves with all of us.
Don’t wait for a difficult diagnosis to make time for the little things your dog loves.
Take the walk. Throw the ball. Find the water. Sit together a little longer.
Because the moments that seem ordinary today may become the memories we treasure most tomorrow.
