It started as a routine call.

Firefighters from Spokane County Fire District 9 in Washington State arrived at a homeowner’s property to deal with a smoldering tree stump.

Their job was simple: use the fire hose to soak the hotspot and make sure the fire was completely out.

Then the homeowner’s dog showed up.

And suddenly, the firefighters had a different problem.

The pup was not interested in the stump. He was interested in the hose.

As soon as he saw water spraying nearby, the dog headed straight toward it.

Instead of staying safely out of the way, he jumped into the action, frolicking through the spray and trying to catch the water with his mouth.

Apparently, putting out a fire was not nearly as exciting as getting sprayed by a giant hose.

The firefighters seemed happy to let him have his fun.

The firefighter handling the hose appeared to lower the pressure, giving the water-loving dog a gentler stream to chase. And the pup took advantage of the invitation.

He bounced through the water.

He tried to chomp the spray.

He played like this was the best surprise of his entire week.

For the firefighters, the call had suddenly become a little more entertaining.

They had arrived expecting to handle a smoldering stump.

Instead, they found themselves providing entertainment for an enthusiastic dog who apparently believed their equipment had been brought specifically for him.

And he was not about to waste the opportunity.

The dog continued playing until he was thoroughly wet and muddy. By the time the fun was over, he looked like he had been given his own water park.

Judging by his reaction, he had absolutely no complaints.

In fact, he seemed delighted.

There is something innocent about a dog discovering something new and immediately deciding it is the greatest thing ever.

The firefighters had a job to finish. But once the situation was under control, they also had a chance to enjoy it.

Their department later shared photos of the encounter, joking about the possibility of having a station dog.

Their message was essentially this: a water-loving dog might make a station dog difficult to manage, but after meeting this particular pup, they wanted one even more.

It is easy to see why.

Imagine walking into work expecting another serious day of responding to emergencies, only to have a happy dog race over and turn your hose into a giant toy.

For that dog, it was probably the highlight of his day.

For the firefighters, it became an unexpected memory from an ordinary call.

And for everyone who sees the photos, it is hard not to smile.

The dog did not care about the reason the firefighters were there.

He did not understand that the hose was being used to extinguish a fire.

He only saw water.

Lots of water around.

And he knew what he wanted to do with it.

So while the firefighters handled the job they came to do, the playful pup created a second mission of his own.

Have fun.

Get wet.

Chase the spray.

And make the most of every second.

By the end, he was muddy, soaked and clearly thrilled.

Sometimes, all it takes is a dog, a hose and a few firefighters willing to let him enjoy it.
