A year ago, he was a neglected puppy who couldn’t even settle on a name.
Today?
He has a badge.
A police partner.
And a job helping protect the community.
His name is Redden.
And his journey from a neglected Belgian Malinois puppy to a certified police K9 is the kind of transformation that makes you stop and read twice.
It started in August 2025.
Emerald Shores Humane Society rescued a litter of Belgian Malinois puppies from a neglect situation in Northwest Florida.
The puppies needed somewhere safe.
One of them would eventually get an opportunity none of them could have imagined.
The Pensacola Police Department saw a post about the rescued puppies.
Instead of looking for a traditionally purchased police dog, the department recognized potential in one of these young Malinois.
That puppy soon became part of the Pensacola Police family.
There was just one problem.
He was still very much a puppy.
And apparently, he had a complicated relationship with the word “no.”
When the department introduced him to the public, they jokingly said he was answering to names like “Pfui,” “No,” and “Leave It.”
In other words, he had a lot to learn.
But underneath all that puppy chaos was a dog with the potential to become something extraordinary.
So the work began.
Redden spent the following year growing up, learning, and completing specialized police training.
He had to prove that he could handle the demands of the job.
Eventually, he did.
By August 2026, that little rescue puppy had passed his certification.
Redden was officially a working K9.
He joined the Pensacola Police Department’s Patrol Division and was partnered with Officer Michael Potts.
And he wasn’t just certified in one area.
Redden became dual-certified in detection and apprehension.
Think about that transformation.
A puppy who once needed humans to rescue him…
Now has a job helping others.
A dog who began life in a neglect situation…
Now works alongside a police officer.
And there’s something especially meaningful about his name.
“Redden” is Dutch for “to rescue” or “to save.”
The name was chosen to connect his past with the future his handlers hope he’ll have.
The police department explained that just as Redden was rescued, they hope he will one day help save others.
It’s hard to imagine a more fitting name.
His story didn’t begin with a badge.
It began with someone realizing that a group of puppies needed help.
Emerald Shores Humane Society gave him safety.
The Pensacola Police Department gave him an opportunity.
Trainers helped him develop his abilities.
Officer Potts became his partner.
And Redden?
He did the rest.
He learned.
He trained.
He grew.
And he earned his place on the force.
Of course, Belgian Malinois are known for being intelligent, athletic and highly driven working dogs, but becoming a police K9 still requires extensive training and the right temperament.
Redden had to demonstrate that he could meet those demands before earning his certification.
Now the puppy once known for “No” and “Leave It” has a much more important word attached to his name.
K9.
His past will always be part of his story.
But it doesn’t define where his story ends.
One year ago, Redden needed someone to save him.
Today, he’s ready to spend his days doing the very thing his name represents.
Saving others.
