Some dogs have a special way of making everyone around them feel loved.

For Nino, a 14-year-old deaf dog, that gift has turned into something wonderful.

After losing his beloved owner, he found himself in a new home, surrounded by unfamiliar faces. But when he started spending time in a preschool classroom, something unexpected happened.

The senior pup didn’t just find a place to belong. He became the children’s favorite classmate.

And he may be teaching them lessons that no textbook ever could.

A New Home After Losing His Person

Nino became part of Jamie White’s family after his previous owner, Linda, passed away.

White, who runs Play to Learn Preschool from the lower floor of her home, welcomed the 14-year-old dog without hesitation.

At first, Nino had plenty of company. White’s children were home from college for summer break and gave him lots of attention.

But when they returned to school, the change was difficult for him.

Nino began getting lonely whenever White went downstairs to teach her preschool students.

He would become agitated when separated from the family, leaving White wondering if there was a way to help him feel less alone.

Then she had an idea.

Why not let Nino join the classroom?

Twelve Little Students and One Special Dog

Before bringing Nino downstairs, White checked with the children’s parents.

She explained that he was deaf, had almost no teeth, and was an older dog who would need gentle treatment.

The parents agreed, so Nino got to meet his potential new classmates.

And the introduction couldn’t have gone better.

The preschool had twelve children between the ages of three and four. While that might sound overwhelming for many dogs, Nino seemed perfectly comfortable surrounded by his tiny admirers.

White described him as incredibly unbothered by the attention.

The children, meanwhile, were fascinated by their new furry friend.

They began finding ways to include him in their daily activities. They read books to him, gently petted him, and even pulled him around in a little wagon.

Soon, Nino wasn’t simply visiting the classroom.

He was part of the class.

A Dog Who Brings Out the Best in Children

Perhaps the most surprising part of Nino’s new routine wasn’t how much the children loved him.

It was how much their behavior changed around him.

White noticed that the students became calmer whenever Nino was present.

Even when they were naturally excited and energetic, they seemed to understand that their elderly friend needed a little extra consideration.

Instead of being told repeatedly to settle down, they began regulating their own behavior to make him comfortable.

They were genuinely interested in taking care of him.

White said she had seen a different side of the children since Nino became part of their classroom.

And it’s easy to understand why that matters.

Young children are still learning empathy, patience, and how to recognize the needs of others.

Having an animal to care for can give them meaningful opportunities to practice those qualities.

Nino’s presence is helping them learn through everyday moments.

His New Favorite Job

These days, Nino accompanies White to preschool every day.

He has even developed a special morning routine.

When the children arrive, he waits near the door and greets each one with a gentle little nose boop.

It’s a small gesture, but it has become a beloved part of their day.

White sometimes thinks about Linda and wishes she could see how happy Nino has become.

She believes his former owner would be delighted to know that he is surrounded by so much affection and has become such an important part of the preschool community.

After losing one person he loved, Nino has found an entire classroom full of people who love him back.

At 14 years old, this sweet senior dog has discovered a new purpose.

And the children are lucky to have him as their teacher, too.
