When Trisha first sent her husband a video of a Beagle named Autumn, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
The dog looked so unusually round that Dave genuinely thought the image had been created by artificial intelligence.
But Autumn was real. And beneath her 72-pound body was a sweet, affectionate dog who desperately needed someone to help her get a second chance at life.
Thankfully, Trisha and Dave were ready to step in.
A Beagle Who Needed Help
Autumn came into the care of Triangle Beagle Rescue after her previous owner passed away.
Her owner had been living with dementia, and rescuers believed the dog may have been unintentionally overfed.
When Trisha, a rescue volunteer, agreed to foster her, she knew Autumn would need more than a temporary place to stay.
Her extra weight made everyday movement difficult and placed considerable strain on her legs and back.
Trisha remembered how Autumn looked when she first arrived. Her four little legs seemed to stick out beneath an enormous, rounded body. She compared the dog to a giant muffin.
Despite her physical challenges, Autumn was incredibly friendly.
Every time Trisha and Dave walked through the front door, she greeted them with excitement, as though they were celebrities arriving at a fan event.
Her personality was impossible not to love.

Small Steps Led to Big Changes
Autumn’s transformation began with a plan developed alongside her veterinary team.
She received carefully measured meals, limited snacks, and an exercise routine that respected her physical limitations.
Long walks weren’t safe for a dog carrying so much extra weight. Instead, Trisha and Dave took her on several short walks throughout the day.
They also weighed her every week to monitor her progress.
The results were encouraging. Autumn consistently lost around 1.5 to 2 pounds each week under their careful supervision.
As the weeks passed, her body began changing. The enormous round shape that had shocked Dave started disappearing, revealing the Beagle underneath.
Neighbors sometimes mistook her for a dog wearing an oversized puffer jacket when they saw her walking outside.
But Autumn was making progress, and her foster parents couldn’t have been happier.
An Unexpected Medical Setback
Just as Autumn was gaining momentum, her caregivers noticed something concerning.
She had started limping.
A veterinary examination revealed that she had torn a ligament and needed surgery.
It was another difficult moment in an already challenging journey. Fortunately, Autumn had lost enough weight for the veterinary team to move forward with the procedure.
Her earlier progress had made an important difference.
After surgery, she continued recovering with the support of Trisha and Dave. The little dog who once struggled with basic movement was now enjoying walks and showing just how far she had come.
From Foster Dog to Forever Family
After months of caring for Autumn, Trisha and Dave had become deeply attached to her.
Trisha admitted that she had never fostered a dog for quite so long. Saying goodbye felt a little like giving away one of her own dogs.
But Autumn’s journey had another happy chapter waiting.
She found a loving forever family who could continue giving her the attention and care she deserved.
By the end of her transformation, Autumn had gone from 72 pounds to just 36 pounds—half her original weight.
Her new family shared that she was settling into her new home, enjoying comfortable couches, and finally living the good life.
Trisha was happy knowing Autumn was loved and spoiled.
Sometimes, fostering means helping a dog prepare for a future with someone else. And sometimes, the greatest reward is knowing that the dog you helped is finally home.
For Autumn, a healthier body was only part of the transformation.
The biggest change was discovering what it feels like to be safe, cherished, and loved.
