Meet Amarillo, a resilient little dog who kept her sweetness after being abandoned and left in terrible condition.

Last month, animal officers in Syracuse, New York, discovered Amarillo living alone in an apartment after her previous owner abandoned her.

Rescuers arranged for her to be transferred to Friends Forever Animal Rescue, where her new caretakers received photographs.

The pictures left them stunned: Amarillo was bright yellow.

Her rescuers immediately knew something was wrong. The color was far too intense to be ordinary dirt or dander.

Could it have been highlighter? Dye? Whatever had caused the strange color, they knew they needed to remove it.

Amarillo also had more urgent problems than her unusual appearance.

She was extremely dehydrated, had severely overgrown nails, and was generally in poor health.

Yet somehow, none of that stopped her from being affectionate.

According to rescue founder Casey Newton-McLaren, the little dog was incredibly happy and affectionate.

She eagerly climbed into the arms of anyone willing to give her attention and love.

It took seven baths before the yellow color began to fade significantly.

Bath after bath, Amarillo slowly started looking like herself again.

Finally, during her 16th bath, the yellow disappeared.

With proper care, food, and attention, Amarillo began gaining weight.

Her coat became healthy and shiny. Some yellow remained in places, but it was no longer the first thing anyone noticed.

Instead, people could finally see the dog underneath it all.

And what they saw was something special.

Amarillo is now ready for the next chapter of her life: finding a family who will never leave her behind.

Her rescuers say she gets along well with children, dogs, cats, and just about everything else.

She is an active little girl who would love a family willing to include her in everyday activities.

A fenced yard is not required, but Amarillo does enjoy daily walks and adventures.

A walk around the neighborhood. A new toy. A cozy place to sleep. Someone waiting for her to come home.

Now she can discover the ordinary joys every dog deserves.

Her rescuers are hoping the right family will see beyond her past and recognize the affectionate, energetic dog standing in front of them now.

More than anything, Amarillo needs commitment.

She needs people who will see her beauty, cherish her personality, and understand that bringing her home means making a promise: this time, she will not be abandoned.

Her unusual yellow coat may have been the first thing rescuers noticed.

It is certainly not the most important thing about her.

Sixteen baths helped reveal the dog beneath the color, but love, patience, and care revealed something even more meaningful.

They revealed Amarillo.

A dog who endured neglect.

A dog who remained affectionate.

A dog who kept reaching for people despite everything.

Now, all she needs is someone willing to reach back—and stay.

For Amarillo, the past may always be part of her story.

But it does not have to be the ending.
