A tiny puppy arrived at The Animal Foundation in heartbreaking condition.

She was only a year old, weighed just 8 pounds, and had almost no fur. Her skin was bright pink, inflamed, cracked, bleeding and raw.

The shelter named her Talulah.

Staff had seen sick and injured animals before, but Talulah’s condition shocked them.

She was suffering from an extremely severe case of mange. The microscopic mites had left her intensely itchy and painfully uncomfortable.

She was swollen. She was shivering. She could barely stand.

She could not play.

Yet even in that condition, Talulah wanted to feel better.

The Animal Foundation knew she needed more help than a shelter environment could provide, so they sent her to a medical foster home with an extensive treatment plan.

Her temporary mom, Amber, had fostered nearly 400 animals for the foundation before. The recovery plan was intense.

Talulah received medicated baths and mousse treatments designed to soothe her damaged skin.

She was given antibiotics to fight infection and pain medication to provide relief.

Mange is treatable, but healing would take time.

Then, something wonderful started happening.

After only one week of consistent care, Talulah’s black hair began growing back. Her skin was healing. Her tail was wagging.

And a little bit of her personality was finally beginning to emerge.

Her rescuers could see her sass returning.

Two weeks after arriving, Talulah’s cracked skin had smoothed over. The puppy who had arrived red, itchy and barely able to stand was becoming wiggly and curious.

She was still receiving baths and medication, but now she was also getting plenty of kisses.

Then came the three-week milestone.

Talulah looked like a completely different dog.

As her fur continued to return, she became more active and rambunctious.

She started enjoying play sessions with her foster siblings, and her happy personality became impossible to miss.

Almost two months after her rescue, Talulah received the news every rescue dog hopes for.

She had found a forever family.

Her new name became Wednesday.

Today, Wednesday is living in her forever home with her family and two tortoise siblings, Herbie and Pie.

The tiny, hairless puppy who once arrived in painful condition is now described as cuddly and sassy.

Her new mom, Annette, says Wednesday has brought tremendous joy into their home.

Wednesday can be wonderfully sassy, but when she wants affection, she becomes a cuddle bug.

That may be one of the most beautiful parts of her transformation.

Talulah did not simply grow her fur back.

She got her life back.

She went from being in itchy agony, unable to stand or play, to becoming an energetic little dog who could run, explore, snuggle and enjoy her family.

She was finally comfortable.

Finally safe.

Finally loved.

And the puppy who once needed someone to help her survive now has something even better: a home where she can simply be Wednesday.

Her journey began with cracked, painful skin.

It ended with a wagging tail, a playful spirit and a family who adores her.

Sometimes, love does not erase what happened.

It gives a dog the chance to become herself again.
