Waking up a sleeping toddler is never easy.

In fact, for most parents, it’s a carefully timed operation that usually comes with resistance, negotiation, or full-blown grumpiness.

So one New Jersey family decided to try a different approach.

If their 3-year-old son, Shalom, hated being woken from naps, maybe their affectionate Golden Retriever could make the process a little smoother.

They were hoping for a gentle “dog-assisted wake-up call.”

What they got instead was a completely different outcome—and a moment that quickly turned into a viral family memory.

The scene started calmly inside the bedroom.

The family’s Golden Retriever, Skylar, carefully walked in while the toddler slept soundly in his bed.

His parents stayed nearby—mom filming, dad sitting quietly in a rocking chair holding a newborn baby, both trying not to disturb the peaceful moment.

Skylar approached the bed slowly, tail wagging with quiet excitement.

She seemed to understand this was a special assignment.

First, she peeked through the bed rails and gently sniffed toward her sleeping best friend, as if checking whether it was time to begin her “mission.”

When that didn’t work, she stepped closer.

Carefully, she climbed up onto the mattress and moved toward the toddler, leaning in with soft curiosity.

The energy in the room stayed calm, almost like everyone was waiting to see what she would do next.

Then came her attempt.

A few gentle licks to the toddler’s face—her version of a wake-up call.

Shalom stirred slightly but never fully woke up. He remained deep in his nap, completely unfazed by the enthusiastic affection happening beside him.

At that point, the mission could have gone either way.

But Skylar had other ideas.

Realizing her efforts weren’t going to succeed, she paused, turned around, and calmly curled up at the foot of the bed instead.

Just like that, the “wake-up mission” was over.

And replaced by nap time.

The unexpected twist sent the parents into laughter off-camera.

What was supposed to be a coordinated effort to gently wake a grumpy toddler turned into a shared sleep session between a child and his dog.

Dad even joked that Shalom would love watching the video later—especially knowing how the plan ended.

Mom, still hoping for a second attempt, tried encouraging Skylar to give it another go.

But the Golden Retriever had already made her decision.

The job could wait.

The bed was comfortable.

And honestly, nap time looked pretty good.

Moments like this are part of what makes the bond between dogs and children so naturally entertaining.

Plans don’t always go the way humans expect—but dogs often follow what feels right in the moment.

And in this case, what felt right was simple:

If the toddler was sleeping… maybe she should be too.
